Towing Limit with a 7.5 tonner

Also worth pointing out that regardless of the fact it’s for private use, you must use a tacho when towing a trailer with a 7.5tonner

Hmm. But my truck is tacho exempt.

Not with a trailer on it isn’t. As soon as you go over 7500kg GTW you need to use a tacho, regardless of if it’s for private or commercial use.

Unless you fit in one of the exemptions in the tacho rules that is, but I very much doubt you do.

This is where it gets turned on its head … find me a law that states it is illegal to do so or any law relating to the manufacturers recommended towing capacity

If there is no law stating it cannot be done then it can be done

I am quite sure that as soon as you put a trailer on heavier than the manufacturer recommends that your insurance becomes invalid and therefore you are breaking the law as soon as you drive on a public road. My insurance has a paragraph in it that says along the lines of “If you’re not using the car in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions then you’re not covered”.

That may well be the case but that is insurance company policy not law

The effect of that policy would be as you state - driving without insurance which is unlawful

Personally I would never recommend anyone to tow over the manufacturers recommended towing weight on the safety issue let alone anything else - that can be seen by a thread I advise in on the H&H forum

Hi Paul, Its declared exempt under point 2 of the VOSA exemption rules (over 25 y.o. & not commercial use) Cert. in cab and current MOT states exemption also. Anything I might not have covered? B****y hope not! Cheers Gruff

I stand corrected, I wasn’t aware of that rule.

Regarding towing weights, I think I have read somewhere, not sure where that cars with a gross weight under sompthing like 1.5 tonnes have no plated towing weight just a recomended maximum, cars over that have a plated Gross train weight and trailer weight, I know my Navara certainly does
