Anne, fetch me the Paracetamols !! I’ll have 4 !! How many drivers fell off their tippers ? this lot sounds like H & S gone mad,no wonder the country’s knackered with all the rules and regs which will never be rolled back as there seems to too many vested interests that employ the “jobsworths”.When I was operating and this stupid legislation was starting to take hold,I did manage to stand up to the [zb] on the basis of common sense but since then it appears to have engulfed the whole of the industry which is ,of course, very sad.Especially if it prevents Nathan from doing a bit of “honest collar” with a No.10 shovel !!! Despairingly,Dennis.

In recent years around the country as tippers have got bigger and much higher off the ground, there has beed quite a few drivers hurt and worse slipping or falling while leveling the load or sheeting Dennis. Its all about litigation I’m afraid as much as H&S. Its the companies covering their backs.
Cheers Dave.

you don’t know the half of it dennis . my son was sent into tarmac’s cement plant with a hiab lorry for a crane off load . he wasn’t allowed to climb on the body to lift the crane out of the way , he had to wait until they put airbags round the lorry in case he slipped , then they had to move them while the forktruck loaded him , and then put back while he dropped the crane and spread his nets . by now there were 12 lorries queueing outside . you couldn’t make it up !! cheers , dave

Suppose your right Dave the litigation mob have bolted themselves onto the H&S legislation and until,or when,it is all swept aside by the politicians it will only get worse! Cheers Dennis.

Nothing surprises me nowadays Dave, and when you’ve been out of the job for a good number of years and you hear various tales, the same as you’ve related you start to believe you’ve landed on another planet, you really do mate!!!We never put any of our drivers in harms way and in nearly 30 years, although we had the odd mishap,it was always the fault of the driver. They never lost any wages and all returned to work fit and well again. We never asked or expected any of our employees to do anything I or my manager would not do ourselves and neither of us were hero’s I can tell you !!Cheers Dennis.

I’ve been told I can’t get in the body onsite to clear say some topsoil that’s sticking; I have to drive back to Gill Mill to use the hose or “safe access platform” to shift it. Now recently I’ve been doing a lot of soil out on the Oxon Berks border; A couple of times I’ve been sent from there to Grundons at Thatcham (the old Colthrop paper mill) to backload flint to Gill Mill. Now Grundons also wont allow access into tipper bodies either so as I cant get in mine onsite I have to drive back to Gill Mill, clean out and drive back to Thatcham :unamused:

Mentioning no names, but a lad (an O/D with a 6 wheeler) at a local quarry was pulling his rollover sheet across when the strap broke. He fell, he was standing on the ground and not on the truck, and broke his ankle and was off work for a couple of month’s or so, he parked the truck up rather than have a driver on it. He got a letter asking when he could return to work, he told them a date, and then recieved another letter telling him that from that return to work date he would be banned for a further (I think a month) for having an accident on company premises! :unamused:

Pete.

Well Nathan, talking about getting into the body to chuck any remains out,we had the road alongside our bungalow Planed and re-surfaced a couple of months ago( well I pay enough council tax !) and the tarmac came from Bardon at Carnforth and Skipton and each one of the drivers got into the body, after tipping into the Pavior, and threw out quite a few shovelfulls before setting off again !There would be 2 or3 barrow fulls out of some of them, they just fired it out onto the unsurfaced bit forward of the Pavior.Cheers Dennis.

One of our artic drivers broke his leg after falling backwards when the pull rope broke; Some good came of it as auto sheets were fitted throughout the fleet.

Its the same this way Pete, they can pull out onto the road and climb all over the lorry, but do anything like that inside the premises and get banned. They won’t load you unless you have the high viz trousers as well as coat. Can’t get out of the lorry unless you have the high viz and helmet and safety glasses on. Its ridiculous.
Cheers Dave.

Unless you’re an ex-pit (collect) customer then you can wander about under the conveyors, get into the back to move tools, go the wrong way around the one way system etc…

Farmers come into these quarries,no high viz gear or any other stuff,no epic card. They get loaded.Yet an artic driver came in last year, they wouldn’t load him because he hadn’t got the trousers :imp: .
Cheers Dave.

Standard practice this. They don’t seem to care once you’ve tipped (although of course you’re not above the edge of the body I guess so its safer). If you don’t get the tar out quick, it’ll set and be a right bugger to get out. Most places won’t let you load sand or dust if you’ve got tar stuck in the body (even a tiny bit).

I bet if the load had been desperate Dave and his was the only motor available the Quarry would have soon “overlooked” the small matter of the trousers !! Cheers Dennis.

It was the bloke in the weighbridge Dennis, just being awkward.I think the driver went into Kington and bought a pair of high viz trousers off a plant hire firm that sells them.
Some of the weighbridge blokes have been drivers, but others who haven’t are just awkward sods.
Cheers Dave.

Aye, a days ban if you dont lock your cab door when you go to the weighbridge and plant office or wear your seatbelt in the quarry. A few of the older trucks had to be retro fitted with a seat belt just to satisfy quarry regs, they were not legally required on the road. All on CCTV with a guy employed to watch the cameras daily for infringements. :unamused:

Pete.

Question for Muckaway (hijacking the thread a bit);

Its been about 7 or 8 years since I did planer work and I’ve got a day lined up on Saturday. I’ve got no weigher so I’ll have to guess the weight by eye. Would a full load look to be about the size of a load of MOT when in the body or is it denser than that? Each loads not going far but I don’t want to take the ■■■■ (either way). Ta.

Just checked Smiths website for you as they have a conversion table on there for m3 to tonnage. It’s exactly the same as MOT Type 1; 1m3 weighs 2.3t.

Ok, cheers for that Muckers!

I took this today at LaFarge siding, Banbury. Shows your point exactly, dave; Collect customer was at the window for about 5minutes, went back to pickup and pratted about and came back for another 5minutes. “On the stop” I reckon rather than showing his EPIC card :unamused:

I’m driving this on Monday; She’s retiring on Thursday and destined for the funfair along with sister 8legger Y572. Bit of a clearout going on as artic unit Y569’s coming off the road aswell. Three less Fodens on the fleet from 2012…
