Tips on Sleeping in between 10-15 hours shifts

A topical news item, but with the usual poor standard of reporting :unamused:

Not sure why they’re talking about “sleep breaks”: Yes you can sleep on a break but that’s not what they’re called; if they’re talking about Daily Rest then at least one reporter out of the dozens who have repeated the same phrase ought to have checked the terminology. At least they managed to refrain from calling the truck a “juggernaut”.

Just having a laugh to myself here…
All the stick us trampers get off you lot and daymen, about tin boxes, unpaid security guards and all the usual b/s…
And all this crap is a better option?? :open_mouth:
Long hours dodgy irregular sleep patterns,.working whilst tired? :open_mouth:

I get a good nights sleep for all of the 3 nights I have in my truck on my 4 day week :sunglasses: and I’m always fresh the next day… because I make sure of it by not working stupid hours and stupid times.
You can keep all that sh for me,.recipe for a heart attack…no thanks.
You all must be on ■■■■ good money to put up with it all,.that’s all I can say about it.

It’s your opinion your fresh in the morn rob , the poor day shift lad who’s got to sit next to you may have a different opinion
I agree with your point your more tired on days than tramping , but that just because we get our leg over through the week where you don’t

ezydriver:
Way too much caffeine - stops me from sleeping after a long shift.

I take a litre flask of “Fresh” Coffee to keep me alert & stuff a couple cans of sugar free redbull as an emergency measure.
Its entirely possible the caffeine during the shift has a negative impact after the shift,

but I’d argue staying alert during shift takes precedence over falling asleep after shift. [emoji23]

Noremac mentioned getting a fan in the room for the summer but why stop at that and get an air conditioning unit, it will keep the bedroom cool, lower the body temperature to aid sleep, the body core temperature.

Argos sell a good one at about £400 called a Princess model, it’s quiet, but the room needs to sealed by covering the window with a blanket to allow the hot air exhaust hose to dissipate the heat from the machine.

If the hose supplied is too short just buy tumble dryer hoses and join them up using heat resistant silver tape.

It has a timer so you could set the time for it to be running when returning home.

i always sleep better if i spray the room with fly spray first

That’s because you’re as mad as a bag of cats.

I dont like tramping because of the risk of being broken into, the loneliness of not speaking to anyone for 3 days, but with night trunking, you have the probkem of driving while tired, being jetlagged every weekend, not sleeping properly in the day.So they are both unsatisfactory things but thats the nature of the job .You cant expect to get a 9 to 5 class one driving job

I’d suggest that the OP finds another job that is more acceptable for their rest and sleep needs

The chances of you being broken into are negligible.
I’ve been tramping forever, never been broken into once, all the trampers I know and have known,.and there are many,.have never been broken into either.
It’s all about parking sensibly. :bulb:

Whats all this not speaking to anybody for 3 days…have you no mates or what?

I think you have a typical dayman/nightman grosslly distorted view of what tramping actually is,.if you want to live like a hermit on an endurance excercise crack on…I and many others who do tramping prefer not to,.it makes for a better life.

Surely your lifestyle of work must have a detrimental effect on you.I have seen your picture are you going to tell me next you are only 30 years old? :open_mouth:

I could not think of anything worse than putting a shift in, commuting there and back day in day out, just to do the same old rinse and repeat scenario,.and especially after what I have read on here…life is just too ■■■■ short mate.

A 30 year old heroin addict you mean!
Yes,rinse repeat, same thing every day, welcome to my world! But with tramping,it depends on being in the right place at the right time,I think.Ive done tramping before and I know its nice to wake up and no commute to do but I worked for Halfords and you had huge pallets of antifreeze to hump off, hurt my back on those, took 6 months to recover, then I was on general haulage ,on nights out in the pub, with the other drivers but it wasnt my cup of tea,a lot of it was listening to all the backstabbing and gossip,so ended up on day shifts.

There was a documentary on years ago about tramping that didn’t paint a particularly good picture. I suppose the classic issues are weight gain and a partner not putting up with it, things like that. A lot of truckers are smokers and drinkers too.

That doc…was it ‘Men who sleep in trucks’? :open_mouth:
Man that was depressing, if I did the job like that I would last a week, but that is exactly how many do it. :unamused:

I met my Mrs when I was a driver so she knew exactly what to expect,.and it works for us, we both get on great, and still do a lot of stuff together after kids have grown up (allegedly  )

Yeah,.I carry a little bit of timber,.but I have the height to kinda carry it off, and I ain’t half as bad as some you see with their fat arse cracks hanging out of their elasticated kecks waddling up to the khazi on the services. :unamused:
Never smoked but yeah I do like a pint, but alongside a good social life, I dont actually need it as such.

the loneliness of not speaking to anyone for 3 days

Loneliness is more a state of mind than the conditions that your find yourself in, and it depends a great deal on your personality type, by which I mean something like the Briggs-Myers 16-factor analysis. Try this if you like, it’s a reasonably sound introduction to personality analysis, and if you can be honest with yourself you might find the analyses quite insightful.

Personally, one of the things I liked as a driver was that my working day was just me, the truck, and the road; not having to speak to people made for a very relaxing time, but that is a reflection of my personality type.

Now I don’t drive commercially, but a seven hour day of delivering ADR or TM Refresher in the classroom is far more tiring to me than a ten or more hour day of the type of driving I used to do, because of the constant talking involved. Some people go stir crazy if they don’t speak to anyone while at work, others are happy as a sandboy.

Perhaps wannabe drivers should think about that aspect of the job before committing themselves?

Apparently Im àn entreprenur!
Yeah, right.Actually, those questions arent easy to answer.

Time to crack open the wine after another boring week…
