Tipper Drivers

Sir LANs-a-lot:

… i should be taking my training with Truronian as i am hoping the jobcentre will help me pay for the training. …

Ring a few tipper firms - if you can get some sort of confirmation that they will offer you a job when you pass your ‘C’, the JobCentre will probably be glad to fund your training. Might be worth checking up on this.

Hello all, i rang some employers including the company down here that does all the councils waste collection and disposal work and although they have work NONE will even consider me until i have my class C.

so i rung jobcentre and explained that NO company would agree to employ me until i have my class C, but i also explained that there is work out there that is available to me once i get my licence…their response was that as i DONT have an offer of a job on completion of the training and passing, i can not be considered…so i am [zb]!!!

thanks for all your help and will let you know if i ever get my class C.

Typical catch-22 situation…

What about a career development loan? You can use this to pay for your training, you start paying it back at a low interest rate when you get a job - OK, there are other rules - but that’s the general gist.

Have a look HERE

doubt i will be able to get a career developement loan due to previous bad credit payments…i’m basically ■■■■■■ till i can pay for myself.

i am thinking about doing van work with driver hire as they may assist me with getting my licence, but not 100% sure.

thanks kyrbo and LANs-a-Lot for the info

just one last thing, for a mobile CB, do you need a licence and if so how do you go about getting one and roughly how much do they cost?

Yes, you do need a license (to stay within the law).

They’re £15/year, and you get them from here:
ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/ … s/citizen/

Also, the stuff about using modified kit is illegal. If you broadcast on a CB license, you can only use approved, unmodified equipment (both transceiver and antenna). RF amplifiers (“burners”) are also illegal (although readily available).

Hi rookietrucker, only just found this thread but I am quite close to you (Redruth)

As suggested, Sid Knowles. There are actually 2 sid knowles down here, Sid Knowles waste which is basically the council, and Sid Knowles Ltd. The latter is the one that runs the tippers and they will take a newbie with no experience. I know because they took me!!! (and boy I wish I had stayed there, but had dreams of long distance class 1… :unamused: :unamused:  )

The pay is not great, i believe that it is now £5.65 per hour with time and a half after 8. The chap to speak to is Grosvenor Knowles.

Nearer to you is Harts Haulage in Redruth but he runs top kit and tends to be a bit fussy. (Although I do know of one chap who did what you were trying. i.e. Harts offered him a job for when he got his licence)

There is also Hoopers at Fraddon.

Unfortunatly there is not a lot going with agencys down here, i’ve tried driver hire, 1st contact and several of the local agencys. Even SMS at Plymouth but the bottom line is that the work is to sparodic.

Good luck with it though, and when you do get that all important licence and a tipper job, the most important piece of advice I can give you is

Before you tip, look up!!! I have seen some “loverly” photo’s of what happens after the tipper body hits overhead power lines

Stuart

blime your in redruth, thats close mate.

thanks for that, i will try those avenues…but at the moment i have an appointment with the job centre on 4th april to discuss training and emloyment etc…so fingers crossed.
