Theory Test - Hazard Perception

obi-wan:
There are many hazards and potential hazards on the road that may not be developing, in other words not changing, moving or becoming a greater risk, a snow covered road is without a doubt a hazard but it is not a developing hazard and would not score.

Hi obi-wan, how would you define “hazard” in this context

ROG:
I have a file of papers from my MP who contacted the DSA & DfT on my behalf regarding my HPT issue and the general issue of hazard perception - they are intransigent - their way is best and thats the end of it was the outcome.
One argument they lost and it made me laugh was when they said that it MUST be EXACTLY the same for everyone and when I asked if that was the same for the road drive, they went quiet.

Exactly the reason why they are not fit for purpose (to use a government term)
Hazards are so varied that a one size fits all, glorified playstation game, is no substitute for practical instruction and examination.

A manhole cover or a filling station with an exit onto a roundabout is not a hazard, unless you are riding a motorcycle.
The overhanging trees on Acacia Avenue are not a hazard in Summer when they are not shedding slippery leaves but they are when you meet a double decker bus or a car transporter coming the other way.
A busy mum with 3 unruly kids in the people carrier is a hazard as she is not concentrating on the road ahead or either side.
An overtaking car can be a hazard if he panics half way past or just get obsessed with your front wheel blindspot as many do.

You are driving down a road wide enough to accomodate a truck and a car in opposite directions even with a row of parked cars, but not if the other driver is driving safely and allowing a car doors width clearance as he should. So the hazard then becomes you as you try to force him over.

What about the local on a country road, he knows the road well and is “making progress” you follow him and then meet another local who also knows the roads well making similar progress.

It goes on and on. :open_mouth:

But as I am an old ■■■■ I never had to do Hazard Perception :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I passed the theory today. 60/60 on the questions and 64/75 on the HPT.

I dont mind the questions … i think its a fair way to assess some basic knowledge.

I dislike the HPT though. although i feel i did well with my score, its hard to think where i obvious missed out on the 5’s so to speak. Having watched through the DSA DVD and the Focus ones, a lot of the score 5’s rely on you picking up on objects that are a perhaps only a few pixels high on the screen away in the distance. When the video quality is not all that great, its a bit annoying that so much is placed on it.

Then there is the manner in which the vehicle is driven … its al very well that we are being asked to identify hazards, but the manner in which the vehicle races down on what is obviously going to make him stop is far from being a good example to those who are new to driving. I remember a comment on here saying on how they were pressing the floor to make the vehicle stop. I was the same.

anyways, its over now, and i’m off to try and book some tuition.

woo hoo !

well done  . now the serious stuff starts :open_mouth:

Hi dieseldave

Yes, I think I know where you are going with this question.

A hazard is anything which causes (or could cause) you to change speed and/or direction.

I know you know that, so was your next question going to be:

Doesn’t a snow covered road cause you to change speed i.e. slow down?

Yes it does but it still isn’t a developing hazard.

a cyclist is a moving hazard => not scorable

But there are cyclist and there are cyclists. A professional cyclist with all the gear and a good bike is, to my mind, much less of a hazard than a seven year old kid with an Argos mountain bike wobbling down the road.

Yes obi-wan, that’s my understanding of it too.
You’re also spot-on with my intended direction. (Probably because I indicated my intention  :sunglasses: )

You’d be right there too, obi-wan.
Wouldn’t that depend on the point at which the clip starts??

obi-wan:
Yes it does but it still isn’t a developing hazard.

Since the snow covered road is a hazard, it might develop into a scoreable hazard, depending upon the other prevailing road conditions…
Alternatively, it might also depend on whether you’d seen the clip previously…
Would you agree that the HPT has some shortcomings??

 Now I’ve owned up to your skill in terms of knowledge and clairvoyance, would you please tell us how you know

Hi dieseldave

Yes I would certainly agree that the HPT has its shortcomings. Since its introduction I have tried really hard to find some value in it and failed miserably.

It is not even useful as a teaching resource as it does not allow for the use of peripheral vision or to look into junctions before turning into them. How can a 50mm lens give a true view of what a driver would expect to see.

By the way, I am not clairvoyant but I am a medium.

It says so in my underpants

obi-wan:

Do I infer from the above statement that you are an instructor of either LGVs, PCVs or cars?

Hi Rog

Until recently I lectured in Road Transport at a local college.

Now I teach CPC (Online and in the classroom) I also instruct PCV, LGV, B+E and cars.

Which of the above do you like doing best

Would that have been anything to do with LCNW by any chance?

Well done. Now the fun REALLY begins!

Hi Dieseldave

What’s LCNW■■?

I suppose that answers your question with a question.

Shortfatbaldy:
Well done. Now the fun REALLY begins!

Yup - i’ve booked my tuition to start on the 27th November ( the group does tuesday to friday and then test on saturday ) . Seems to all have happened quite quickly.

Really looking forward to it now.

Advice - the lorry is bigger than a car :exclamation:

Logistics College North-West.

Oh Dear!!! And I had pictured you as such a Big Boy
