The humble Ford D series

Hiya ,
What was the thing with the ‘west coast’ mirrors in the early 70s- didn’t ERF try them as well? Are they ‘flat’ glass? & what were they like compared to normal mirrors .

They still put those ■■■■■■ things on new trucks here … the idiots seem to think that making a truck look oldfashioned and retarded is a good thing … Western Star, KW, Pete’s ? All retarded ■■■■■

Here’s another one parked in the back streets of Manchester sometime late 60s.Unable to make out the reg or the street name, but again its got the cowcatcher on the front.I remember my old man having one of these on for a brick company in Stalybridge in 1967( photo from M/Chester archives) very popular motor on the tipper work back then.

a much younger me in a well worn w reg d series one of the last built, this is the one with the ignition key between the steering collumn and the dashboard, you needed to be double jointed to turn the key  you then started it with a button on the dash.they all had the d series clutch pedal squeak, even the 16t rigids.happy days.

I got this D1000 new in May '68 and it came with “Western” mirrors and “Cow catcher”(which I removed)but I found the mirrors spot on! In my opinion the ■■■■■■■ was a superior engine to the Perkins although we did run a couple of Mastiffs and the Perkins V8s did OK.Cheers Bewick.

1966 reg D series Ford flatbed used on the movement of milk churns.
