AV1D:
After watching the stobart tv programme I thought the MAN trucks were solely for the fuel deliveries?
Hi AV1D,
Without derailing this topic, or boring you folks with unnecessary ADR technicalities, it’s fair to say that a company can’t just use any tractor unit to pull a fuel tanker trailer.
Generally, the tractor unit for pulling a fuel tanker trailer must meet very strict legal criteria set out in ADR, such as having a special electrical wiring loom and have a whole host of extra safety-related bits and bobs that you wouldn’t normally see on a run-of-the-mill tractor unit used for general haulage or supermarket work.
Due to the dangerous nature of the cargo, it’s highly probable that the vehicle/trailer also needs to carry an extra document called ‘an ADR Certificate of Approval’ from a VOSA testing station in addition to the normal M.O.T. Certificate.
It goes without saying that, due to the legal specifications, ADR approved vehicles are relatively expensive to buy and maintain.

HI CG,
ADR comes as two law-books and it’s quite a piece of legislation.
Dave’s ADR trivia facts:
Both ADR books weigh 7lb 4oz (3.35 kg) together.
Both ADR books lying one on top of the other are 2 ¾" (7 cm) thick.
Both ADR books together have a total of 1,261 pages.
Approx 25 pages of Part 9 of ADR are devoted to just the legal constructional requirements for tankers.

Hello AV1D,
Thankyou for your post marra. I’m glad you like the photos.
The couple of MAN photos I’ve posted are owned by Stobart subbies. This is why they are on general haulage
Stobarts own MANs that they used to have ran on general haulage, but the only two MANs they now own (the two tankers in the TV programme) are only used on fuel distribution.
Hope this helps AV1D and thankyou for your kind comments about the thread.
Kindest regards

Hi v7victor,
Perhaps we should run a sweepstake on it.
Whatever it is in his hand, it’s not a dipstick!!

Hello v7victor
I had noticed him up on the top of the tanker. Maybe he’s the driver who’s decided to say s** off to health and safety rules.
