what about the old two pedal beaver,in its day it seemed easy to drive very quiet, great gearchange, but am I rambling, the erf was a great motor but it did bounce around a lot ,but it never rusted , also the foden sleeper with the hi top 450 cat very nice for long haul , one of my favorites was a seddon atki with the double sleeper although the top bunk wasn’t any good ,ok for a bit of storage ? I drove a buffalo for a few years, very fast, we used to pass all the Volvos -dafs - scanias over brough with 48 pallets of bottles no problem, and then we got scammell crusaders wow they could take off when the axles weren’t on fire so its each to their own ,you either liked or you didn’t, good topic tho,

I have to disagree here I find Erfs a good ride ,the seddon Atki has to be the hardest ride I’ve had and as for the smokey Cat in the foden well at least the cat had enough torque on a long run to stay in top gear ( if It didn’t overheat) because if it didn’t you would pull your shoulder out try to move the poxy gear stick with the awfull cables ,just saying like!

- Wouldn’t surprise me, they had quite a few of those ECXs but I don’t recall seeing them since except a couple you’d see in the midlands pulling bulkers on scrap. I’ll describe it: cab all yellow, bumper plain grey plastic, the only ECX in the N R Evans fleet that didn’t have a colour coded bumper. It took months to peel the already flaking paintwork off that bumper but I found it strangely therepeutic .
yes the good old buffalo, if I remember rightly they didn’t have a normal cylinder head, the engine had to be split in half ? but they did fly they didnt last long onward/ackworth bought hundreds from british Leyland buy one get one free I think ps yes I did remember the Runcorn lot somewhere in my distant memory

Yep, well maintained Sed Ack 401, ■■■■■■■ 14 litre, Eaton Fuller, Rockwell, still rate that as the best working lorry i’ve ever had, pulled like a train good on fuel, could do a serious days work, Jacob brake meant the brakes were only needed for emergency or coming to final rest.I had a 3 month old (slightly doctored with bigger injectors by Vee and Inlines) ex demo twin steer issued to me in 1984 and ran that for 3 years without a single hiccup (apart from 2 micro switches for the Jake), cruise at 70 all day long @ 1100rpm at a full 38t and return 7 to 7.5mpg consistently, gave it an economy test run one night lightly loaded @ 50/55mph, returned 12 mpg…no thats not wishful thinking or lies, and i’ve really had a genuine 15mpg out of a 420 Scania artic more recently similarly lightly loaded but kept under 50mph and driven in manual override…so shocked i actually took a pic of the dash readout, sad i know.
As said above, i wish i could have that good old ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ combo in my present steed, nothing romped away or was up to cruise so quickly as that ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ why i’d like to long term test a Hino for its ‘‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’’ old school design.
And the Seddon Atkinson 401 had a fairly nice interior, had a nice quality feel to it

Hee-hee, I’d forgotten about this thread! I won’t bore you with how I’d choose the ERF NGC ‘European’ if it was the 1970s - you know all that .
If it was the '90s though, I’d have the last of the ERF E-series export model (which actually overlapped with the EC): the one with LHD, ■■■■■■■ NTAA 410 and Eaton Twin-splitter as standard; except me being me, I’d actually have the optional high-roof, the ■■■■■■■ NTE 400 lump because it matched the Fuller RTX 14609 'box and I’d have it in lwb 4x2 config. That’d last me into the new century on long-haul . I thank you! Robert

Alas no! He replaced it with a DAF 95XF:430 which was a real flyer (I know that 'cos I did a couple of Morocco trips in it for him one Xmas!). Robert
The best British built lorry? No doubt about it, the Volvo F88 290. Built in Irvine Scotland.
However that’s not in the spirit of the original post so I’ll put forward the Bedford TM with the big cam 400 ■■■■■■■■ 13spd Fuller and Rockwell back axle, nice big cab and an indestructible drivetrain. Like Robert, the handlebars would have to be on the left and a lwb 4x2 with plenty of diesel and a big chassis mounted tool box, oh and a Kysor and roof rack on the lid to give It the authentic long distance look.

Hiya,
I never got much new stuff in my driving years, with the exception
of a Couple of Atki Borderer’s and a Scania 80 (which I thought was
the biggest heap of rubbish ever created) a few Bristol’s when was
on for the Red and Rust, they was OK for the era but I did do a trip
in a Crusader and that had a big Roller built in it was somebody’s
motor who had phoned in sick and was loaded with an urgent load
and after that trip the gaffer needed a crowbar to prise me out of
the Scammell it certainly showed my regular motor an ERF with the
240 Percy inboard the way home, yep I could’ve lived with the big
Crusader but other than moving one to couple up in the yard never
got a drive in another one, some motor at that time.
thanks harry, long retired.

IIRC, they only fitted the 370bhp ■■■■■■■ engine. If you wanted 400bhp, you had to ask for the two-stroke alternative, Geoffrey.
It took no more than a turn of a spanner to make a 370 into a 400, but yes, the E370 was the biggest factory option as I understand. TRUCK tested one against the 142 Scania, don’t remember which one was the winner, but I would lean towards the Bedford. A mate of mine had one that had been doctored by ■■■■■■■ and he was never far behind the 142 intercooler I had at the time and that had 420hp to the 388hp of the Scania on test, I used to drive that as if I’d stolen it too.

Not to mention a day or two and a set of injectors and an after cooler later I’ll drive away with a 435 hp 6 x 4 rigid drawbar prime mover. But it will have to be rhd because I’m left handed and I prefer the left hand gear shift.
Although in keeping with the topic I’ll also put one of these with it but with the most powerful Rolls option they’ll put in it.
