I know from recent personnel experience that due to the closure of Middleton (manchester) Doncaster are now delivering to stores over the pennines & covering Middletons chill drops. This has resulted in changes of territory Doncaster covers, loosing stores in the N.East, but gaining a large chunk of Lancastershire & Cheshire. The drivers at Doncaster are slightly unhappy because instead of 8hr average shifts, they are doing 10-11hrs+ Which is where I fell foul recently as I took a 10am agy booking there thinking Id be done 6pm-8pm and be able start on another job at 8am the next day, but after 2 extra drops (1 in manchestorfer) I finished at 23:45. It was also a flat rate throughout :frowning:

when did middleton close then i’ve been delivering chilled into there 3 times a week for years does this mean who ever has been unloading all this time is an elaborate hoaxer mascarading as a tesco employee running an inordanate amount of lorries in a fake tesco livery? :unamused:

the future

already been there mate. i pulled a stobbie trailer last year in a tesco unit. i pulled my collar up so i wouldnt be recognised that day
i cant see their drivers taking a pay cut when stobbies take over and they have already taken strike action before so i reckon it will happen again. i for one do not cross picket lines and i wont be driving when it happens anyway but they are still truckers so best of luck to them. poor sods :frowning:

i was only shunting that trailer, shunting with that unit was a pain in the rear end, they had too many shunters in last night and some other crap happened, if your back in tonight ill let you know.

in at 10 tonight mate

cool ill have my break then

I never knew anything about middleton closing :S
I was thinking it wasnt that long since i used to regularly tip into there, then realised its actually about 4 years.eeeek, so alot could have happened since then!

its gonna be funny when stobbies do take livingston over if they have folk in like the guy last night.

struggle to get it onto a single bay, nothing on each side for a good 20 feet, first he tried blindsiding it then abandoned it then he tried it on his good side and after watching him fail miserably for 10 mins i told him to drop the trailer and id get it…thought i was doing him a favour but this is where the fun begins

hey gets out does all the lines etc, puts the legs down (not far enough) then he drops all the air out the suspension of the unit to the point where the tyres were rubbing the mudflaps,

now u can imagine what happened next when he pulled out, all i heard over the radio from the other shunters was {zb}ing hell, 3 other shunters witnessed his actions.

trailer near enough went on its knees and even our shunters struggled to get under, ell mines did because i had the pride of the fleet…:frowning:

tis the last time i do a stobbies driver a favour though

How true ,Glass Glover Distribution,if anybody needs to look at how to treat drivers they were the ones to look up to,what a shame they’re still not around today. When i started at Tesco Doncaster (March 1989)i really thought i’d hit the jackpot i was earning fantastic money and they provided you with everything even down to a torch and batteries, only thing they didnt supply were your socks and undies!

I wish you all the best Doncaster or Manchester in these uncertain times.

I work out of Middleditch for Stobart.

Can’t say I’m happy abouty this, then again, I transferred to Middleditch to avoid redundancys at Irlam’s in Stoke.

I never saw this as anything other than a stop gap.

That said, I found the job easy, the staff there pleasant and the kit to be half decent.

What I’ll be doing after June 1 I don’t know.

I have held an LGV Licence for 14 years so I sincerely hope I will be able to walk into a different, ideally better paid(!) job.

The ones I really feel for are the many hundreds of unskilled staff who work at both Middlewich DC and the Trunking Station, many of them are not as fortunate as I - a clean LGV is almost a guarantee of work if your not fussy - I sincerely wish them the best.

i work casual from appleton done a 15hr yesterday which was sat 6th, i finished at 2100, i live an hour away from depot, rang planner to find out what i am working for sunday he told me to be in trafford park for 0600, as if i said, his reply you can just reduce your rest period carnt you!! i said i wont get home tonight till 2200 to be in trafford park means me getting up at 0400 to get too trafford park for 0600, now i dont no about other drivers out there but this must be normal behaviour for stobbie drivers…so he was shocked when i told him too shove it,
i can honestly say they treat casual drivers like scum and i understand why there hated, there was more said but i wont go into that…lets just say i aint the type to be bending and taking it!! …so as you can guess am off today sun 7th   so back to the drawing board,

It is hardly Stobarts or the planners fault where you live. If you decide to live an hour away from work.

Because you did 15 hours, then it is impossible to take anything else but a 9 hour break

It goes without saying that a driver who sleeps in a cab for 11 hours is better rested than one who goes home for 11 hours due to the pressures of homelife and staying married

well its not normal for are lot to reduce, most have 11 off if they do a 15 as a protest at being given[forced ] to be out there 15 hrs   ,but there are the odd exception to the normal rule of things    , my excuse is i like set start time, if i had 11 hrs off id start the week at 1 a.m and finish it starting at about 7 a.m :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :frowning:
as for treating casual driver like scum, last time i saw ours they had set start time, set runs, seemed too happy for my liking with there lot

i didnt decide to live an hour away it is were i was born , the post simply states the lack of care and understandind for a man who is simply tired, also manchester is further still so they have casuals that live in manchester makes sense to use them , if i was tramping it wouldnt matter your not a stobbie planner r u

‘…It goes without saying that a driver who sleeps in a cab for 11 hours is better rested than one who goes home for 11 hours…’

Simply not true for this driver. I’d be better rested anywhere else rather than camped-up in a lorry - but I’m well contented daisy-wuss.

i have had too many close calls with reduced rests and travelling time. as far as i am concerned, my rest starts and ends at home. its fine reducing to 9 hours in the cab but when you are not, you have commuting, eating, shower etc etc etc so you are lucky if you get 6 hours sleep. i cant live on 6 hours sleep when im working any more so i refuse to do it

reduction in daily/weekly rest is and always will be at drivers discretion .

if you need more than 9 hrs off , dont let them bully you into it as they dont have a leg to stand on.

I wouldn’t be so sure. There’s two issues here, one is the amount of hours you are going to have ‘off’ inbetween shifts and the other is how much daily rest you are going to get in.
If you where to refuse to do a run and return to base before 13 hours work and your employer had scheduled you to do a run taking you 14 hours and therby actually reducing your rest period by one hour the i’d think you wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if you didnt carry out the request. Infact i personally know several Wincanton drivers who have had written warnings for failing to carry out a reasonable management request and that was to work over 13 hours per day.
As for time off inbetween shifts i think you’ll find that planning your daily work pattern is the responability of your employer. Now i know everyone is going to say…tired, saftey, etc… but if you arn’t able to do your job and others can then the issue will be levelled at you. Either way i wouldn’t describe it as the employers don’t have a leg to stand on, quite the other way round really.

its not the length of time working that is a problem, its being expected to reduce your daily rest period after a long shift, but you no how it is you start 0500 on a monday, because of long shifts and taking your proper daily rests by friday your startin at 0900 gettin home past midnight, bit of a double edged sword, ive done many 15hrs its the nature of the beast but i wont put my health or saftey at risk…unless its my choice
