The reason its the fridge depots collecting this stuff is because the waste is frozen before collection and then transported at -20, the waste is only to be collected once trailer is empty of fresh produce, thats how I understand it anyway
The waste is frozen, your transporting it frozen Well if that is true then the shop staff/ drivers need informing that should be procedure, because that doesn’t seem to be the procedure at the moment.
But I’ll clarify that the next time at a tesco dc

Well all I can say is in my experience all the stores I’ve collected from are not sending it back frozen, and I’m not taking it back frozen, neither are hundreds of other trucks,I’m starting to think this stuff tesco drivers are bringing back frozen isn’t the same stuff were bringing back, surely by now someone would of picked up on this,.
Hundreds of trucks bringing the stuff back unfrozen, stores not freezing it ,no- ones noticed ,something’s wrong here,I don’t think we’re on about the same stuff,or if it is there’s a major communication error somewhere

You as a driver should be refusing to collect waste if its not frozen. Trailer should have no more food left to be delivered and trailer should be set to -25.
I refused to load a Tesco truck with meat products from our factory some 6 or 7 years ago.
They used to pick up from us(back haul) This particular day the trailer(reefer) stank so much I refused to load!
I called Tesco (Buyer) and they threatened to pull the plug on us basically
Bully boys from start to finish Tesco.
Santa:
So are we talking rotten, putrid, leaking fluids? Or are we talking out of date stuff that’s really no hazard at all
Everything that would have gone into the bin beforehand. Sweepings from the car parks, emptying litter bins outside the store, dog ■■■■, needles…?

No you’re getting confused here.
What we (Widnes and Doncaster) are carrying is:
Cardboard - Straight into a 4 sided cage, been doing it for ages.
Plastic - Ditto
Bakery Waste - Pink piggy degradable sacks in a 4 sider, been doing that for ages.
Meat Waste/Animal By-Product - Frozen, placed in bags in trays then into a 4 sider, been doing it for ages too.
Food Waste - Any food waste. Waste from out of date food, canteen scraps etc. Bagged then put into a cage with a plastic liner in it. Not Frozen
General Waste - Anything that doesn’t fit the above that would have gone into the bin before. Bagged and in cage liners, not frozen either.
del949:
hadn’t considered that
in my local Tesco (which is only a small one) stuff is unloaded and comes straight out to the shelves
It’s currently only Superstores and Extras that are doing this.
Fair enough the trailers are probably cleaner than they have been for a long time. But the cages aren’t getting washed still. Its all very well saying that everything is double bagged, but given the state of some of those cages (sharp loose bits etc), it’s inevitable that the bags will get holed…
All sorts of crap gets stored on those cages in stores (waste stock waiting to be recorded before being binned for example), then left outside for god knows how long full of soggy contaminated cardboard until collected. Have they ever been religiously cleaned out? Of course not.
Bit of a non issue of your ask me. The food stuffs we put in our mouths are never in direct contact with the cages or the insides of trailers.
when my father drove hgvs he was given a job delivering meat dripping with blood, after delivering said meat he was then reloaded with fresh cream cakes to deliver to a hotel he asked if he could clean the vehicle out first but was told the delivery was urgent and to get on with it or walk,[this was in the early seventies]he was so disgusted he reported the company to whoever was the health people in those days, the result was the company got fined and my dad got a small reward [although he lost the job]but in those days you could walk in to another job the next day which he did and got,my father never grassed on anybody in his life but that disgusted him so much i would not blame him
Asked question last night and told carry on as I am,but chap said same again if I’m not 100% happy with internal cleanliness vor it!then it’s there problem to sort.
But I must admit not really thought about cages it carried in ,anyone ever VOR a cage
LOTS of times.
Not strictly VOR but ‘out of service defect’.
Any company using them that has any kind of safety proceedure should be doing the same.
Bits of wire stuck out at eye level etc, just waiting to blind someone
Anyone know what kind of cages are being used? I’ve seen some like these This product is no longer available. and they don’t seem like there’s much room for plastic liners to rip…

About 6 foot high, 3 foot square. take a walk around your local tesco, you’ll soon spot one.

I used to do it all the time at Vauxhall. Made my dad well happy as he was the VX bloke responsible for the cages but if the brakes didn’t work or there were wires sticking out id defect it. I even had one in such a state I refused to collect it and bring it back to the warehouse for repair. Wheels falling off and wires sticking out, If it had put it on the trailer it would have gone through the curtain!
As for the rest of the story it’s just standard fleet street ■■■■■■■■ on a slow news day. Lets look at this from the other side. Tesco’s decide that it’s best to send out a different vehicle to collect waste, DM, Sun, Guardian et al would be up in arms about the extra vehicles on the road polluting our cities and committing premeditated murder against cyclists. There would still be a significant risk of contamination from out of date product because the supplier vehicles into the RDCs carry out any rejected stock!
I am not a fan of Tesco’s distribution apparatus, too much of my life has been wasted looking at the back of a boggo basic Axor waiting to go on a bay, but they do seem to be damned if they do and damned if they dont.
