Coz they are much better than mid liftsWhy? (genuine question)
Because of MUCH better traction in slipper conditions.
A tags home environment

Tags are better for traction and manoeuvrability plus Ive always found thenm to be better on fuel, the down side is they can tend to push you in a straight line when you have to make a sharp turn

Yes,but not with a Tag that steers…

A Tag that Steers ! your just showing off now !!! ha ha I remember having a second Wheel put on my Tag axle (making it a twin wheel) and feeling like I was the shizzle !! ha ha ha
I know its not the same its not a tag axle . Whats with the very small axles beween the front axle and rear axle is it for more weight or just in case you just go over the weight for the lorry ? Tony

Guess so 'cause they’re not cheap…

Yes you can run at 44t with the little wheel, saves weight and space plus you can cover them up with side skirts and not use them unless you get a pull !
ok, so tags are better for traction & manouverability. So whats the advantage of the more popular midlfts?

Cheaper (mainly). Plus, when 3 axle units came in with 38 tonnes, the majority of truck manufacturers preferred to build second-steer (or fixed second axle) chassis. Foden ploughed pretty much a lone furrow by majoring on 6x4’s - only Scania at the time seemed to be pushing tag-axles, presumably because that’s what they built for their home market.
Since the industry has had almost 30 years of this, I suppose it’s a hard habit to break. You do tend to see more now, and I gather all the manufacturers will now build you a tag-axle unit; some just need a bit more arm twisting than others.
I find they are more manouverable in tight spots than a fixed/steering second axle (although it’s not that big a difference), but tend to ‘nod’ when empty with the axle up.
the ride quality is quite bad compared to a midlift when running with the axle up and the tag can easily get caught on the underside of the trailer while turning in difficult places

I assume with a steering tag axle, that the tag steers the opposite way to the front wheels the same as a rear steer on a rigid would? Otherwise I imagine it’d scrub the drive tyres heavily

(Another noob question) why is it easy to get caught? I would imagine the chassis isn’t any longer than a midlift?

the centre drive axle acts like a pivot, so imagine going over a big hump back bridge and what would happen to the tag axle.
few more
Awsome thread!!!
