is it any good as a sat nav?

They take up a lot of windscreen space…

You can actually get car mounts for the iPad (http://www.amazon.co.uk/iPad-Windscreen-Dashboard-Holder-Cradle/sim/B0043DMXYQ/2), but the general feedback is that they are too heavy for most of them, & I rather think plod would take a dim view if you were seem using one.

MAN has fitted an iPad as standard in its blinged up TGX - Corinthian. Haven’t seen how its mounted though.

Video streaming works well with 3G. In my experienced, WiFi isn’t all its cracked up to be, cause it depends on the speed of the base connection. Was using WiFi in Brum on Thursday and switched back to 3G because the WiFi was so slow.

The best TV App I have found is TVCatchup. Its free and you get about 45 channels including sport, docs etc. All you have to do is submit your email address. Watched Terminator2 on my iPad while it was playing on the telly in front of me…brilliant.

Before you take the p**** it was a test and was on fast wireless, haven’t tried it on 3G yet.

I have also subscribed to the RHA’s Roadway Magazine through its free app and Trucking. Read them in portrait and you don’t need to zoom so just like the real thing. You don’t have to worry about buying your mags each month. They just turn up each month on your iPad. Also got a fishing mag and Vauxhall’s V Magazine.

Yeah I keeped seeing it on tv and didn’t bother then a mate and sky customer care person said about it

For those using tvcatchup, select the mobile tab as it defaults to higher definition by wifi. Mobile isnt as sharp but usually works ok.

A good free app for those that deliver to farms and other obscure places is the sustrans cycle map. This uses ordnance survey maps and puts you on via gps. If you leave your satnav app on in the background you will get voice guidance too.

I bought Renault Trucknav at £118 over a year ago and find it really good. Why go to the expense of £400 for a Tom Tom truck when all it can do is navigate?

If my iPad broke tomorrow I would go straight out and get another. As for positioning, I have it velcroed to the dash on my fh12 to the left of the handbrake. Had to pop out the air vent to keep everything flush.

You also have Internet access for incomplete addresses and phone numbers on a reasonable sized screen.

I tried watching a movie on sky go on the iPad but it wouldnt stream fast enough said I needed a wifi connection, but if I watched the footie on sky sports it works a treat.

Anyone brave enough to admit to downloading films of the torrent sites and copying them over to the iPad?? :sunglasses:

To me the iPad is a cracking toy to play with but it can be a bit pricey (I.e initial purchase, apps, decent accessories etc), no problem if you’re 1 of these truckers on mega money. One of the major downsides for me is that you can’t store things like tv programmes, movies etc on it to watch offline (unless there is a function to do it that im not aware of). So if you’re down the road all week or stuck in some [zb] RDC for 4+ hours you’re stuffed. For that reason I decided to keep my laptop because I can download & keep anything I want off Sky go or iplayer & watch it at work, I can watch DVDs too(so I don’t have to buy/rent from iTunes etc to watch on iPad) & I don’t need to be online to do any of this. The 3G data plans don’t last long if you’re streaming/downloading a lot unless you have unlimited data (which is limited somehow somewhere In the small print). I haven’t tried anything on android (as I don’t think I’d like it) but it might be better for entertainment. I think All major RDCs should have free wifi for people to use

Its not pricey at all for the ipad 2, got mine for £100 on the 3 network and then £25 month for the contract for 15gig. 2 weeks after i got mine they brought the price down to £79!

You must be 1 of these truckers on mega money then lol. I paid cash for mine & got a pay as you go sim, when I’m skint I don’t owe anyone anything. Taking out long contracts on stuff seems to work out more expensive in the long run for me, don’t know why+the job could end at any minute…

Hi I’m new.

Just wondered if anyone on here, like me, has got into the iPad age?

There seems to be an app for everything now and if you are stuck in your cab for a few days, a 3G connection lets you watch telly, listen to music etc, etc all for £27.50 a month. Well that’s what my wife got my iPad for from Vodafone for on a contract. I own it in 2 years.

Trucking, Roadway and Commercial Vehicle Engineer all have free apps on the Apple Newsstand so I can also download those magazine issues - you have to pay thru iTunes in the apps to see the mags - to read if I want to. But you can get some of the national news papers and lots more.

Works for me !!

Hi with the ipad you can get Truck sftware for sat nav and also it can be set up as a looped recorder to film what is going on in front as you drive as well as music films web access so a link to home and family whilst your away yes i for one like it and use it…

I have a blackberry phone and when I got it from car phone warehouse I gained a very nice Blackberry Playbook. Very good screen, about half the size of an iPad so quite managable. Amazing screen resolution and with a 32GB hard drive I have movies, music and all sorts of documents so I can work on it too.

BTW it was free!!! The best kind of purchase!
