I bet if it was a volvo or scania the story would be different, its amazing the storys some blokes come up with not to drive certain lorrys,i knew of a fella who did damage to a unit so he was given a newer one, unreal
come to mention it, it was a Volvo he wanted !!
Ive also seen agency guys turn their nose up at a set of keys and ask for a newer better lorry, they got it aswell to get the load out and save the hastle,my old boss used to say[its taxed ,tested and roadworthy ,thaz teckin it]

Years and years of health and safety nonsense have given us countless drivers who cannot think for themselves, and countless others who hide behind the rules to get out of work.
I have driven for 25 years and had to spend 3 hours learning how to use a 15 meter rear steer and a Daf CF this switch does this that one does this blah blah blah.
Some of the things that comes from the mouths of so called drivers defies belief, steering wheel attendant is the most apt phrase ever coined.
Totally agree, while changing a trailer bulb at services the other day a driver walked past with super clean hi vis vest and Bluetooth ear piece in his lug and said I wouldn’t be doing that I’d be calling for the fitters.
Now I’m no big mechanic but changing a trailer bulb or headlight bulb etc is basic knowledge and a driver should know how to do these things.
But we are just a small firm and we all just muck in and do stuff like this.

I did a shift last night and when i was in the office waiting to find out what i was doing, a full timer came in complaining to the manger saying…
" there is only a hire Renault Unit left and im not driving it as i dont know how to as ive not been trained !! "
and the manager replied " your right we need to train up the guys who are not familiar with the Hire Units !! "
so the manager then turns to me, gives me the keys and says " you take it out !! "…and he walked away
it was just lucky that …SUPER AGENCY DRIVER !!.. was there to save the day !!
ive worked for lots of companies and driven nearly every unit out there and NOT ONCE have i ever been asked, do you need to be shown how to drive this ?..ive been EXPECTED to know how to drive it !!
ok some switches and knobs are in different places but with a good look and some common sense you should be able to drive any unfamiliar unit !!

And now I’ve been asked if I would mind covering another run next Tuesday/Wednesday as they can’t get an agency driver to (drum roll inserted) go into London!!
Sounds fair to me. I’d make all them Londoners come out to the M25 to collect their stuff.
We had one of those Super Agency Drivers in earlier this week. New to us, he was just being briefed when I came into the office to pick up my keys/notes etc. He was given details of the run, then on being told that the truck was in the yard next door to ours (same company runs it, but there’s spare parking space there) he asked where the trailer was to be found. “No trailer - it’s a rigid.”
“I don’t do Class 2 work.” was his reply, along with some old waffle about not being able to get the seat far enough back so he gets a bad back. Apparently the agency “Should have told us” (odd that - we specifically booked a Class 2 driver…). With that he walked off the job.
A few minutes later, after our supervisor had phoned the agency to see if they had another driver available, and been told “No”, Super Agency Driver breezed back into the office saying that he “didn’t want to cause us any grief” and that he would condescend to actually have a look at our little Daf and see if his back could possibly tolerate the seat for a few hours. I suspect that in reality he had phoned the agency himself and been told that there was nothing else going that day.
Anyway, SAD set off on a straightforward run delivering pallets to hospitals in and around Bristol. You know, those difficult-to-find places that are never shown on road maps, satnavs or road signs…
Perhaps needless to say, he failed dismally to find places such as Bristol Royal Infirmary and eventually phoned in, stating that he was going to take these impossible-to-deliver pallets to NHS Supply Chain at Bridgwater (he knew where that was, apparently) and they could deliver them. After a few feathers had been spat out by the TM, telephone contact was established with another depot where one of the regular drivers talked him through the location of the hospitals concerned. I believe that he did eventually make most of the deliveries (under protest), and returned to the depot several hours later than expected. I think the real reason that he “Doesn’t do Class 2 work” had by now become all too apparent.
Our lot do this. Can’t drive our new trucks until you’ve been trained on them. That is, until a load is desperate to go out and it’s the only vehicle available. Then the rules go out the window.
had it similar about 15 years ago at a super market frozen RDC near DIRFT
6 agency driver waiting for trucks… but as they had 6 newish MANs in yard we couldn’t drive them, as we “are not trained”
4 hours later after we all phoned agency as regards what was happening., our agency told us to bool off as far as agency concerned we have C+E and can drive a truck
The instructor on our dcpc course, who is also a trainer on forklifts etc told us if we use a pallet truck or tail lift we all need to be trained now. When we had all finished laughing, he said the reason is those things are now legally classed as lifting equipment?
“Yo drive, how come you didn’t give your keys to security?”… “Sorry I haven’t been trained to carry them”

‘… with a good look and some common sense you should be able to drive any unfamiliar unit…!’
Blimey - I’m against the current form of DCPC - but isn’t this advocating ‘bodge & scarper’ in the extreme
So how does this square with DCPC cabbages (and insurance underwriters) on here
Leaving aside that ‘…common sense…’ is a bolleaux useless expression, treating the public road as a Proving Ground aint my preferred way of starting a shift.
At least ask that a Driver’s Manual (in English s’il vous plait) is in the cab, eh - or is that too soft?
