Some overhead messages around the M6/M5 split to let drivers know that the hard shoulder isn’t always a driving lane woouldn’t go amis.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Why cant they put ,ie A1 closed after the nearest place name, instead of a1121 roadname , might have a better clue as to wear its shut rather than getting a map out
Trukkertone:
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Not diverse enough the HA, Have to be showing HAPPY EID this week and something else next week so everyone feels included.
And for those truckers in heels ‘HAPPY LGBT WEEK’ whenever that is
I personaly think they should either have useful service information like travel times, incidents and likely future disruptions or they should be blank.
Being reminded to wear my seatbelt or not drink and drive just makes me switch off and ignore them.

yep, merely increases the signal to noise ratio.

60miles to M5 62 mins …yeah in ur dreams with 44t dragging up that hill
or the other morning Jn 25 to 27 M25 closed why not add a time that its gonna be open so it reads m5 Jn 17 to 15 closed till 06.00 simples
… They could tell jokes, like on ice lolly sticks
football scores or racing results
… Anything is better than being told “slow 40” when you have been stationary for 10mins & crawled along at 2mph for 20mins before that!!!
The problem with putting any message up about foglights is wasted on a lot of car drivers as most don’t even know they are on, let alone how to turn em on. They’ve likely knocked the switch with their kness, handbag, laptop holdall, keys and have no idea where the switch is, so drive round totally unaware, and totally clueless as to how to turn em off
+1

Because they work on average traffic speed not your speed so work it out, The motorway is free running at that time.

Because there are only so many ‘characters’ & lines on a VMS simples,
Does no one think before typing ?
Knock Knock jokes…
1st Matrix… Knock Knock
2nd Matrix… Who’s there…?
etc etc
■■■■ it, missed me turn off and I still don’t know who’s there.

Really good point, racking your brains because you recognise the number of the road but carnt remember where it is, it drives me insane trying to remember so you can divert yourself. All part of the job I suppose.
Depending on the size of the VMS sign, there is only room for either;
2 lines of 12 charactures. 2 lines of 15 charactures, or 3 lines of 15 charactures. Spaces count as a characture.
See here http://www.roadsuk.com/signs/vms/
Also the messages that are set, have to be approved by a government body that decide if they can be included in the list of messages available to us.
Free text on these signs is not available. (to us)
When warning of road closures, use signs that are placed before an alternative route so drivers can use it. Example; A3 Hindhead tunnel closed - signs on M25 only show this after the turn off for the M3. Anyone going to Portsmouth would be quicker to use the M3 instead of the diversion but had already missed the turning as they didn’t know.
or even tell us about delays that are relevant to the part of the country they are displayed in, i really dont see how i need to know the Dartford bridge is closed when i,m just past Thirsk and still in North Yorkshire!

You see that a lot. I was going up the M50 a few weeks ago and towards the M5 junction was a matrix telling me the M62 was closed at Junction 32, or somewhere. What proportion of those going up the M50 - which goes from nowhere in particular to nowhere else - at 6 o’clock on a Friday afternoon were likely to end up at Hull?
THINK BIKE, THINK TW*T
Sign Not In Use always makes me smile,
