Suffolk hauliers

This just gets better and better.

Yes,A.B.Morton was indeed Ralph’s & Harold’s father, and ran quite a large fleet out of Felixstowe, and he was still going when I moved to Felixstowe in '79.
And I do believe he had another depot in the Cambridgeshire or Bedfordshire area,as some of the trucks had another address on them.

John Weedon, now there’s a name I’ve been trying to remember for some time!
John ran out of Trans UK’s depot, and did a lot of work with Trans UK.
Apart from that Fiat 159,he had a Fiat 170,a Bedford TM day cab and a DAF 2800.John was a real nice guy.

And that Ralph Morton F88 has Stackers name on the front, that’s another name that brings back memories.
But that Robinson motor can’t be an F89,not with an L plate.

Volvo BRK 124 T (F12 6x4) :astonished:
Used to driver this when it belonged to Plant Eng Colnbrook Good to see the old girl again
Remember Angia buying a few of the trucks in the 80s inculding F88s and a 6x4 F89 they keep the cabs dark blue just put their name around the middle.
Recon the picture was taken after loading @ aglia concreate Norwich if I am correct.

Thanks for the info KW, well I got photos of half his fleet then, here’s the 2800. I never saw the 170 or the TM

will find out about the pearsons motor dieselcowboy, im sure they are linked to cartco who were brought by russel davis, kindle will know more as bob used to work for them, pearsons were going until recently headed by ted seaman,

kw, stacker i have seen working for dailyfresh a couple of years ago and more recently someone whos name escapes me (no idea who he/she is just noticed the plate)

That DAF was driven by Keith Carrington,he later went on to work for Tolemans out of Ipswich on the Volvo contract.
The last I heard he was driving for Colchester Car Auctions, again with a transporter.

His name is Keith (dunno how I should remember that :unamused: ) but his surname escapes me.I think he’s driven for just about every company in Felixstowe over the years.

keith i think stakers surname was rudland, and if thats the case his brother is colin who was transport manager at carters when i was there.

That’s absolutely right John.
Colin Rudland was in fact Keith’s step brother or half brother, and was known as Snow White,on account of him having seven kids!

I know this is a long shot but i’m trying to trace the history of a 113 Scania. My old man drove it when it belonged to R.Turner haulage but it then went onto a farm in Suffolf somewhere and i know for a short time it had something to do with Elveden farms. Can anyone help? Pics? Info? Be much appreciated! The registration was G898 WBJ. An R cabbed 113 320 with a hydraulic tag axle. Could quite possibly wound up being a 360.

Truckerash, have you any gen on the 2 series Scania of D.C. Balls? The old man had one of those when he worked for him. And you’re right to believe that Dave Ball was based in Newmarket. He ended up parking the mootrs in Caps Cases yard (who he worked for) until he packed up and sold the business. It’s now Roadrunner express transport. Think he sold his garage to Ivan Hughes who owns NRT.

As far as i know that is a pukka 89, that I know this is sad, but here goes, the 89 was lhd only & breathed through a stack on the right, the 88 had the stack on the left & the 88 of the time (240) had the american size wheel stud set up, which the british 88’s only got on the 290 which also had the full width grille, but was a UK market only model to compensate for the lack of a rhd 89. More 88/89 nonsense on request!!!

Spot on Newmercman the 89 was available on an L reg . The earliest 290,s I know of were on N plates and had cylindrical stacks as you say on the left of the cab full width grilles that were deeper than the 89,s and the front access panel lent forward.

Stupot:

This is one of Carters trucks in CEL colours

Stupot, that’s another interesting one, I remember Carters being liveried like that, and they had a lot of motors in customers liveries as well. I wasn’t aware that they had a CEL livery in those days, it’s on more and more of their trucks now in plain white with black & gold lettering.

A couple of notes:

Anybody know what CEL stands for? I understood it to be an amalgamation of Colin, Edward and Leslie (who was their father, the original W Carter I think?) - can anyone put me right?

The naming convention on their trucks is another interesting one. Originally, in the 50’s, when they were running ex-wartime motors like the old Dodge (show below)…

…they began with the prefix name ‘Alde’, because they originally came from Iken, a village between Woodbridge and Snape, and near to the River Alde. It was later on, when they were established in Melton near Woodbridge, when they started to use ‘Deben’, as the yard is just next to the Wilford bridge over the River Deben. They claim that in the future they are going to start using names of other rivers such as Solent for those based in Soton, but I’ve never seen one of them, has anybody else?

If you’re around Felixstowe you sometimes see one of their old motors shunting, I’ve seen a few gems there, including an F10 in the dark green livery, I think they must shunt between the docks and Melton as you never see them further afield.

That’s right Stupot, my dad had an N reg 290, the early ones had the blue trim & dash from the 240, the 1976 models onwards had the brown trim & the dash with the strip of warning lights along the top

chorcheela

yes you’re right about the river names with carters. I’ve seen some of the southampton based trucks with “solent” names, also when they bought out Peterborough Heavy Haulage a few years back I remember seeing some of their FH’s with “Nene …” names on the front.

I hope they don’t open up in Leeds - there’s a river near Garforth called the ■■■■ - could be interesting…

Also the CEL bit is correct as taken from the owners initials as far as I know - one of their previous companies was CELWOOD which was a joint venture with Jess B. Woodcock (■■?) I think.
[/b]

the cel group stands for carters engineering limited which is how they started out in business

rusty nail do you have any other pics of any of roger turners? i worked for a company owned by them a few years ago and still speak to gary warren who runs it now and again, i would be interested to see any pics of them

I think Euromat is right with Carters Engineering Ltd.
The Fiat in the picture actually missed being signwritten for a while but I remember all the Carters liveried trucks as Deben -------- and all the CEL trucks as Alde ---------. The names of the trucks normally given depending on the country of origin.

Wot gen do you want Rusty? Ive got a few more pics. Wot was your dads reg number? May have a pic of it…

Hi guys,

thought id post in on this one being a local lad. Keith Rudland AKA Stacker now shunts on the docks for ProLogic shunting services driving a Merc Axor, his brother Colin was working for Magnus Group at Ipswich driving an XF SSC on contract to De Rijke pulling tilts out of Felixstowe and Harwich. I know both of these very well as they both came to Hanbury Davies as night drivers when i was running the Night sheets in the office, they moved here from Dailyfresh but left because Dailyfresh got rid of their Felixstowe based fleet.

Im only 23 but i have a good knowledge of the local haulage scene around Felixstowe because ive worked at various companies as a traffic operator!
