Wembley (Empire) Stadium in the early days.
Strange! The place looks derelict and overgrown. Was the picture taken during one of the two World Wars?

It was only recently built and opened in the 1920βs and the picture of rural Middlesex shown was effectively transformed into the urban mess of North West London during the 1930βs-60βs.
Realistically the pic is either before it was finished and opened for use or not long after.Probably the former.

From what I can gather the construction started in 1922 & the pitch was ready for 1923.

It could be that the train drivers were on strike, again and they have just heard that alternative transport is being provided.

I think it is a Karrier Bantam, The Police motor cycles have Manchester reg numbers,
and the car is a Standard Vanguard. I got it wrong earlier, even though I knew it was a Karrier Banyam. Cheers, Ray.

Hi Suedehead,
Looks like the A4 at Marlborough.

Definitely a Karrier Bantam, the railways had hundreds of them. I donβt think any of the railway companies had S&D lorries, only specialist tackle like the Freightlifter fork-lifts. There was a famous case involving one of these carrying a load on its forks on a public road - the police pulled it over and judged that the forward vision was so obstructed by the mast and load that it was too dangerous to use. Shelvoke and Drewry put their thinking heads on, extended the wheelbase by a foot or so and added a second cab over the steering axle so that it could be driven safely on the road with the mast at the rear. They christened it the DuoDrive, and it satisfied the police for road use.
