Just read that despite using subbies to pull trailers during this pandemic, Morrisons have done a deal with Stobart and got rid of Subbies!
Let’s all boycott Morrisons for shifting on their subbies at short notice!!
Stobart are a subbie. Paying only 1 invoice instead of many individual ones will save them a lot of time on admin. I’m not seeing the problem. Stobart will be losing work just like everyone else so if they can position themselves to keep their workforce employed then that’s a good thing. Business is business and it’s survival of the fittest in this recession/depression we’re entering.
The problem is that stobarts are a virus themselves in the haulage industry. They are undercutting so smaller players don’t stand a chance. They put family firms out of business. That’s the problem with it.
Tooz:
as it’s been said, it’s a dog eat dog world, when all the subbies came in to the depots, all the agency guys who have been there years have been kicked to the kerb and are lucky to get one shift a week there now
even the full timers are sitting around for hours waiting for a load as the subbies have priority.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
thatl be because the subbies will get the job done and for all the full timers do then they might as well sit around all day.
it worked like that when i ran sainsburys from east kilbride to northern ireland.
we did a full card trip which was easy as there was 2 hours each way plus waiting at the docks on the ferry round trip in one shift whereas the plobbers took two full days so they just subbed all the work and let the industrious ones do locals.

But the real question of course … is it Gordon, Thomas, Henry or Percy?

My apologies.
I need them to put me on 80% for a month or two so I can catch up with the developments of the Fat Controller and co
[emoji38]
You should see it within the next 6month as apparently there’s some economic ■■■■ going on, I’d not know as I’ve been on “0”% since December so nowt changed here [emoji24][emoji38][emoji38]
My luck may be in though as I hear Stobarts have a new contract…
Actually, ■■■■ that I’ll sit the storm out instead [emoji16]

But business isn’t about giving your competitors a chance.

don’t know what the cost of all the subbies wad, but wouldn’t have been cheap, some were bragging 600 pounds a day?.
That wouldn’t be unbelievable. I know Fowler Welch pay £500 on the run up to Xmas and often it’s just a single tip and maybe reload or come back with empties.
The figure i heard Stobarts were doing it for is £360

I was subbed out 5 yrs ago , driver / lorry at £550 per day , seems strange after a £200 million reported loss they’d start doing subby work for £190 per day less
It’s just revenue for Stobarts, it may keep them in business a bit longer. If they last till Xmas and there is no competition left they can charge what they like.
All about keeping the name.out there.
And hoping some.of the smaller companies go.under.
And once things are back to normal. Everybody will want there stuff like yesterday.
And be less competition so anyone left standing in theroy could name there price .
Why were still operating being a small.buiness 5 trucks.
As the owner said if we close what work contracts we have will.go elseware. And when we open they won’t come.back there’s no loyalty no more

Even stranger that Stobarts themselves were using subbies when I was there.
I mean your going down the bog, yet subbys are still being used while your own lads stood idle, or scratched about on shunting work, just doesn’t make sense.
I remember seeing Coltons shunting for the sugar contract, and MJD lived there too on I believe the cola work, the rice seemed to be the only work Stobarts did out of their own site…probably due to it being cash/carry ■■■■ at rice prices even the rice growers themselves wouldn’t move it for [emoji38]
Sparks were regulars in there too but they seemed to only pull their own trailers, few bartrums but they seemed to drop/swap their own trailers.
Yet now Coltons are looking for work according to social media so have stobart decided to bin off the subbies themselves and take the last of the peanuts out the ■■■ as they look to pinch every penny in and maybe now go all out for blood and crush everyone else instead of vanishing, next will be a total wipe out of external agency staff use too as after all they have their own…
I mean the amount of money owed can’t just vanish surely?
Looks like Welch are on the offensive too, could we see a welch/stobart merge, devide an conquer, amalgamation of debts/assets then squash out all the juice and morph into the next big 3pl?
It all stinks to me, Mark my words they are either going big or going bust and I’ve a sneaky feeling their may be some shares on the float in the next few months…

Not a chance of them doing it for £360 unless they have an agreement that they only do stores within a short radius and a limit on the runs. The company I used to drive for over 10 years ago did some subbying for them and they paid £550 a shift back then with a requirement for 2 runs, usually a local and a distance. The distance one was nearly always the furthest store away within their region, presumably so they were getting their pound of flesh for their money. The subbie made money on the weekdays but on the weekend (especially Sunday) he made nothing as he had a bill from me for 12-13 hours at double time on top of his diesel and running costs. If Morries actually had some organisation going on those times could be halved, but too much sitting about waiting for a load.

if they do it for £360 by running at a agreed loss, then that loss will be a drop in the ocean compared to parking the trucks up and letting the attendants stop at home.
plus it also means they are in the door and running as and when the media find a new flavour of the month puppy and this hysteria finally ends
