According to the 1974 edition of the CVs Observer’s Book, the Steyr 1490 (same cab but previous model, I think, to the 91), had a 350-bhp supercharged V8 diesel with "8 forward and 1 reverse constant-mesh gearbox, plus one crawler gear for extreme hills.’ This sounds suspiciously like a 9-speed Fuller! Can anyone confirm? Robert

Thanks ‘Anorak’! However, I had already checked this site. Bafflingly, they give much technical detail without ever mentioning gearboxes! Robert
We once considered a purchase of two Steyr (middle, I remember 890 and 1290) chassis (tipper)and were impressed by the stock in Brussels as well as the test. We didn’t buy though.
I recall Steyr had/has a joint venture with ZF in the Austrian city of Steyr. Both ZF Ak and Ss
were offered and their own Steyr-gearboxes. Too tricky to operate Steyr (shortages on service) outside Germany and Austria unfortunately

Yes, I was wondering whether the constant-mesh 8-speed + crawler gearbox mentioned earlier, actually referred to a ZF rather than a Fuller. The pictures below of a 1490 show what looks like a ZF gearstick to me. Robert
Two more.

This first one has an Eaton Twin-splitter, is still on the show circuit and is very well thought of, according to
another write-up (I think on Biglorryblog). The units in the 2nd and 3rd pics down also have a Twin-splitter in it (maybe they all did!). Robert54

Although nothing to do with Steyr Trucks. Here is a photo taken in the 60s of the wharf at Great Haywood Staffs.Stan used to drive for H.W.Hunt,the corn merchants.Stan lived in the house on the corner which I assume belonged to Hunts.Note the Riley Pathfinder.Ford Anglias (one being my Co.car) and the Bradford van. This place is now a base for Anglo Welsh boat hire.

Yes Massey Bros had light Green Motors I think Once again one thing brings up another and takes you off the main subject.I can’t think off a Co in Toldish Lane which op the road to Gt Haywood and the Clifford Alms, then up the hill to Colwich where Stan had his first yard at the station and through Rugeley and past Richardsons( after Colwich) Stan went over in a Bulker of Hunt’s at Foston.I see one of Massey’s reps in Uttoxeter now and then.
Tony
I think you may remember the by-pass started around Toldish lane.Do you remember the cafe where Ed Wheetman’s is.I could tell you a bit more about that ( nothing sordid) but more and more off the subject.
I think that Frikus from Graz were one of the biggest Austrian firms who delivered to the U.K. and the Middle East in the 80’s.
Another one of mine, a mate found on the internet.
