Is waxing your turtle legal?
Yes but you have to keep tyhe records for at least 15 months.
examine the market to work out your competetion then Decide what work you want to do.
Get your work lined up first before you get a motor then assess your costs on your turnover. And do takes this advice, DONT GET WORK OUT OF THE MAGS!!! The work may be OK, but the money will not be and may not even materialise.
Jan is a quiet month to be startin after the Xmas! You wud be better doin it before Xmas with the run up to the event, that way you will be quite busy.
Good Luck
If you wanna do it badly enough, you should.
If you’ve got doubts, don’t.
Lots of good (and bad) advice on here.

People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones (or bullets )

How’s the MOPACC?
have no choice about starting in Jan as that is when finances are available. I’m in Beds and was wondering if anyone knows of any good companies this area i could contact for work for Jan?
cheers
I know this is probably the wrong end of bedfordshire, but you could give HE Payne a call. They are in Wyboston, just off the A1.

Do you have your o’licecne and insurance sorted?
Lots of people disagree with me on here , but my understanding is you have to maintain the O’Licecne financial requirement at all times, not just at inception or renewal of the licence - its emergency money.
to be honest mate, i just don’t know where your getting that from, if it’s emergency money as you put it, wouldn’t that mean if you’d had an unforeseen expense that money would then be gone?
good point about the o’license though, unofficially vosa are making it more and more difficult for a new start to get a license, my advice would be get the license in place before spending a penny on anything, and theres no need to wait, you can apply now and start trading in three months time.

Page 10 of the GV74 book:-
DO THESE RULES HAVE TO BE MET AT ALL TIMES?
3.13 The criteria of good repute, financial standing and professional competence which are incorporated in our domestic operator licensing system are set out in European legislation.
There is a continuing requirement to meet these criteria. New rules on access to the profession came into effect in October 1999. These enable Traffic Area Offices to carry out interim checks at five yearly intervals to ensure that operator licence holders comply with
these rules.
point is, you only need to show (or more to the point you’ve only got the option of showng) that x amount of money per wagon is available to you if your a new start, i.e starting from scratch, if your an existing company who has been trading a while who has then applied for an o’license, you need to show three months bank statements which don’t require any set amount but purely need to show you’ve traded in a proper manner i.e not bounced any cheques, kept in the black etc so i assume once you up and running similar bank statements are all you’d need to show “good financial repute”?
like most of the operating standards, it’s a complete nonsense, it’s like something that was drawn up by some old barrister thirty years ago and hasn’t got much to do with the realities of operating a wagon.
paul b - spacedudepersonthingy is right.
Don’t ask me why ‘cos I don’t make the rules, but the financial standing money has to be available (with immediate access) at all times.
I know most only get asked to prove it at the start - but they can ask any o’licence holder to prove their financial standing at any time - and they do - I’ve just had to prove again.
I agree with what you’re saying totally.
What baffles me is how do big firms cope financially?
It’s such a waste to have money sittin’ around doing nothing.
Such is life.
I’m honestly ready to pack this all in.
■■■■ the lot of 'em.
Ian.
Ian, you are right, the money per vehicle has to be available at all times, so if you have got a few motors then your’e looking at a few grand. I read , I recall, last yr, one of stobarts operating centres licences came up for renewal, and they couldnt show that they had a spare £6,000,000 to cover the vehicles!!!
Now they say this money is for the vehicle for “emergencies”, so what happens if you buy new and are covered under R&M, + Warranty, Y do you need to show x amount per vehicle ?
Am I right, if you are a new start, you only have to show that you have the money available for the wagon, I think its £6500, and dont have to wait 3 months to produce 3 months bank statements ?
