Standard of English

Toddy2:
I think the standard of basic grammar has fallen,
Whilst an effort is made by many foreigners, our own officials make such a poor effort.

I do chuckle whilst out on the road;

Example: sign says, USE BOTH LANES

How exactly? Swerve side to side?

Should it not read. USE EITHER LANE. ?

WELL DRIVEN. Where is that well?

Should it read. DRIVEN WELL?

DANGER LORRIES TURNING

What is a danger lorry?

I could go on & on, but I think I may be turning into Victor Meldrew :imp:

Can’t wait to see what it’ll be like in 10 years or so. Kp Lft, Slw Dn, Ctn or any other messages where the kids of today find vowels take up too much time and space

Now that Brexit is only a formality away, and the uncertainty for foreign nationals regarding their rights to remain in Britain after we brick up the tunnel is increasing, should a proper command of the English language be part of such decisions?

Brexit to the EE driver means,Visa’s will now need applying for and paying for. It’s not going to mean bye bye EE drivers.
Hopefully it might force them to learn English better and actually pay into the full system more.

Yes, get those sponging EE drivers to cough up. But what about others? Dutch drivers? Germans? Portuguese? Belgian? Danes? ( I know drivers of all those 'Western European ’ countries who live and drive here. And if you start deporting European nationals, or expect them to get visas, what about Brits in Europe? I’m sure the Spanish will be happy to let Dores and Danny reside on the Costa del Essex

No need for EE driivers soon- we’ll be giving more work visas to our new trading partners and English is widely spoken in India.

Ee and all none uk residents will need visas.just like we will to live in Europe.I am a fan, as that is a fairer system, than the free for all we have now .

Not sure about other European countries like Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy etc., I’m sure Andrew will let us know what it’s like in Spain, but it certainly isn’t free here in France. When I moved here in 2005, there was no instant money bag at the port, I was lucky that I bought my house outright here, the only allowance that I was allowed was a family allowance of €250 a month, which did go up with the increase of children. I wasn’t entitled to anything else, dole etc. as I hadn’t paid into the system here. It was a case of go find work to get into that system.

As I understand it negotiations with the EU the European UNIION, wll apply to all countries in the Union equally. No picking off of separate countries for visas or anything else. That’s what Unions are about.

Well it clearly does not matter whilst the “foreign nationals” are here earning an honest wage, they are welcomed by every agency/employer under our GB and gainfully employed. If the great English language was a requirement to a certain standard then bring it on, I may have the full spectrum of higher & further education, years of industry experience both technically and managerial
however all I need is a pulse and capitalism wins each and every time.

I spent several years living in Belgium, originally self employed but later as an employee.I had Belgian resident’s permit and driving licence.I receive a small pension now but at the time would get nothing from the state.I had to marry the English woman I lived with because she would have been deported if she remained single. Our daughter did receive schooling from the state.
AndrewG probably knows more than me about living in Spain because he is probably a resident.I live there up to 183 days a year in my own(paid for) place because I do not have residency although I do have an NIE number which is a requirement to buy a lot of things.I don’t know any Brits who work for a Spanish employer and a British driver would have no chance because we have a poor reputation.Think Benidorm.I have a car with spanish plate because tax, insurance and running costs are a fair bit cheaper. If Andrew works for that Spanish company as a Brit I think he must have impressed them.

It was a fair few years ago now Gidders that i started subbing for this co. and was already fluent in Spanish, however things have changed dramatically over the years, it would be pretty difficult if near impossible if i were to come here now looking for work as it isnt in abundance as it was once was, the Spanish nearly always employing only their own now. Thats not to say there isnt work here and in some cases being a Brit speaker can be an advantage in the holiday bar areas ect but as ever this work is generally only seasonal. Im lucky in that ive paid for my home here as i bought well before the huge increases and subsequent crash in around 2008. Spain is a great place to live but anyone looking to move here now needs to be financially secure before taking the plunge

Is unemployment quite obvious out there ? I read youth unemployment (under25s) is something ridiculous like 50% - very sad.

Probably slightly under that figure (around 40%) but yes, ridiculously high. Adult rates are running around the 22% mark. Some figures put it less taking into account training schemes with temporary work offered but overall its not good

T

I’ll let you Google translate ND.

Klopt.Dat is ook mijn mening.

How can you ask foreigners to have a decent grasp of english when you have plenty of demonstrations on many forums like this of British born and bred who can’t even spell simple four letter words in their own native language?

Precisely. So many of them don’t even understand such simple words such as “irony” or even “whoosh”.

This is insane and very warring on behalf of T.May former job and current one as well.
Even being in the country for 20+ years, being married to a British citizen, having British born child and paying taxes, knowing English language etc. doesn’t guaratee you permanent residency in UK. Just unbelievable!

theguardian.com/world/2017/
 ver-brexit

  1. to gain permanent residency in the uk, one has to take an english test. 2. It also costs over a ÂŁgrand as well.
The latest bit i have read on eu citizens is, that all are welcome up to the point when article 50 is triggered, and anyone who wants to come will have to apply for a visa, and have a job to come to. All those already here, will be allowed to remain, now i dont know how this will stand, as Teresa will want to protect our citizens when travelling to/from the eu, or residing in an eu country as well as working there. Its obvious a lot of negotiations are going to take place
one thing for certain, we are not going to kick anyone out. With regard to transport across europe, i assume not much will change, but we could have to revert back to the old system of T forms or TIR systems
who knows
we have to wait and see.

Your info is a bit old as the Tory politicians backed from the statement for 15 march cut off date, stating that its just a discussion/option. After lawyers said will be illegal for the UK government to do it, as UK will still be full EU member. You can not ask people for visas after 15 of March, but in the same time trading freely until March 2019.
