Seen on the a 75 yesterday 9th Sept.
Great photos you see Wm Armstrongs everywhere these days, they must have a large fleet.
There is a a picture of a newer Dourie Farming Co Foden on Brian Edgars Fotki site and it is a cracker, I can just see Mackereth, the Cattleman howling like a wolf when he sees it.
“Culbae for Pigs” on the headboard at one time if I remember correctly, I used to meet this Foden most mornings as I headed into Dumfries and Galloway 1977 - 80. Was there an earlier Foden than this one ?
It used to come into Fodens Depot at Carleton, Carlisle occasionally.
Happy Days, Cheers, Leyland 600.

Just announced tonight on Border TV News the old established Heathhall Dumfries body & coachbuilder Penman Engineering has gone into administration but is continuing to trade at the moment. They have had a good reputation for many years building cabs for Albions in particular, mobile libraries and shops, insulated containers many for Road Services Caledonian, swop bodies and armoured vehicles speciality. Sad to hear of this development after 157 years of trading. The company was established in 1859.
Cheers,
Leyland 600.

If I’m not mistaken Gerald when D C Thomson of Dundee changed from flats and sheets and ropes they converted to demount containers on their 4 wheeler ERF’s which used Kendal as a change over point and these containers were Penman bodies I’m sure. Previously DCT parked their two of three sheeted motors under cover overnight in Z. Crabtrees Garage in Kirkland but once they switched to containers they were parked outside in a yard opposite the Duke of ■■■■■■■■■■ on Shap Rd. The Kendal drivers ran to Withy Grove in Manchester. Cheers Dennis.

Not just sure Larry but D C Thomson printed the likes of the Dandy and The Beano in Dundee and I think they also owned The Times newspaper and IIRC Britania Airways ! Cheers Dennis.
Hi Dennis, Im getting a bit mixed up, I used to deliver paper to the Express, But Ive just remembered they were on Great Ancoates Street not Whitey Grove, But I do recall Law Bros delivering reels of paper to some firm in W/Grove in the 50/60s era, Regards Larry.
Hi Lawrence & Dennis. I thought you would both have been fans of Oor Wullie and The Broons in the Sunday Post published by DC Thompsons of Dundee. A good number of their ERFs are now preserved and appear regularly at various rallys. Their all grey livery with just narrow a red band was a distinctive style with no lettering at all on the cabs making then fairly anonymous. I did not know they operated a changeover at Kendal Dennis. Other well known publications as well as the comics were The Peoples Friend and Weekly News.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
Somewhere lodged in the back of my mind, I seem to remember reading a biography of DC Thomson some fifty years ago. I think he led a fairly ordinary life in the backwoods of Canda until he was in his middle sixties. I think he used to collect the mail from town and get in the back of his covered wagon to let the horse find its own way home while he read the papers.
One day he read something about Dundee, which I think is where his family came from (the Scottish spelling of Thomson - as opposed to the English Thompson). He emigrated to Dundee and built up a massive publishing company over the next twenty years.
There’s hope for us oldies yet - you’ve still time to do it all again Dennis!
John.
Hi John, I don’t know about any Canadian links with this firm but there is a comprehensive history of the firm if you click on this link.
Some years ago in my coaching career I had to pick up a load pensioners from St Johns Church in Brown St, Camelon Falkirk next door to Walter Alexander Coachbuilders and transport them down to a Christian holiday home at Blaithwaite House near Wigton where they spent about 5 days with me taking them out each day locally in my coach. Most of these folks had either worked on the buses for Wattie Alexander or had worked in the central repair works in Brown St or in the coachworks across the road. While sitting in my seat waiting to set off the group were all chattering away when I heard a lady right behind me say " He disnae ken whit we are talking aboot" meaning me, I turned to her and replied " Oh aye but ah ken fine whit ye are talking aboot, ah dae read the Sunday Post especially Oor Wullie and The Broons." Laughter all around this was a fantastic group to work for and an enjoyable week before taking them home to Falkirk. The lady in question pointed out to me a shop and flat at the end of the tenement row on Brown St saying that this had been Alexanders first office and the great man himself had lived in the flat above, she also said her husband had been one of the company’s first conductors.
On an evening trip up into the Caldbeck Fells I explained to the group that our local BBC television programmes now coming from the Sandale staion up there had previously come from Kirk o Shotts just south of Falkirk, one of the female helpers informed me that her father a Mr Quentin Kirk had been the designer of the Kirk o Shotts TV station hence its name and not the Church at Shotts as I originally believed.
Just a lot of useless information I know but something to keep us occupied.
Cheers, Leyland 600
