HOLHAN34:
thurston transport were based in abercynon just north of pontypridd.they ran 3 f10 tractors carrying soft drinks under contract
for Masons, also had a fleet of milkfloats serving the valleys.lorry business did not last long, sold up in mid eighties

Hohan34, you are right on there my mate lived in Mountain Ash and his fatherinlaw had the milk round there. They had close ties with Thurston, next time I see him I’ll get more info.

Dave and Andrew, as one of the early posters on this thread I am amazed where we are today.
Andrew, your contribution has been tremendous, and thanks to your hard work have established a loyal following.
Here’s to the next 100, cheers Paul.

hi all,

what an abortion  !

hello andrew.
you are correct about thurston dairies, the origin of the name started when a milkman from abercynon called mr jenkins lived and operated from thurston street abercynon, the business was sold around 1963/4 to a man called don griffiths from ynysyboeth and in all fairness to don he built up a very big operation in milk initially then he turned his attention to warehousing and distribution of soft drinks from a purpose built unit on the quarter-mile industrial estate in abercynon which is near to where garth bakery is situated today, don died a few years ago but his wife is still around,
thanks graham.

hi graham,
i thought that you may be able to shed some light on this mate.i asked my parents today, they said the name was griffiths, they were very good/regular customers of ours 25 + years ago.i wasn’t aware of them having lorries though  ,until john (smallcoal) said.
regards andrew.

Looks a good one Andrew, wouldn’t mind having a look at that. Will have to consult my boss  .
Cheers Dave.

with regard to Thurston dairies, their yard was located off abercynon road, it has been gone about 15 years now and there are now 4 large detached houses where the oiginal dairy was, the lorries were indeed located on the industrial estate in abercynon and when they finished the property was taken over by shamrock coaches(later veolia) and the legendary clayton jones, who was on the welsh news earlier today because of problems with o licensing relating to another one of his companies called st davids travel
there was another transport company located next door to garth bakery, ceri lewis ran F12 tractors on furniture from aberdare, dont know if he is still in business
congrats on 200 pages only been member for few days but fantastic site
