mechanic77:
I think I can remember Cyril Williams having a yard next to a house on the left hand side as you went up the hill from Brynmawr to Beaufort [towards ATS garage on top]. This would be around the mid 80’s and I seem to recall Dafs [2800 or 3300 type] and flat trailers there.
Hi mechanic77, please do not take this as 100% but iirc Cyril Williams packed it in the late 70s, as did Crompton electricars.
I remember their yard being on the right hand side of the main road coming from Beaufort to Brynmawr. It was next to a row of houses and was just hard standing, as if two or three houses had been knocked down to build the yard. About half a mile down the road was a right turn which took you down to the town centre passing Weeks Bros slaughter house on the way.
If you carried straght on you would come to the roundabout on the heads of the valley half way up black rock.
So if coming in the opposite way you are right.
A couple of Cyrils ex drivers were instructors at Heads of the Valley driving school in Gilwern.
Neil, don’t mean to be an anorack, stuck at home with flu, just bored.
Cheers Paul
Thats exactly the yard I remember. Maybe someone else had trucks there later, the ones I recall where blue/white, as I was born in 1977 I’m assuming the trucks I remember would have to have been there into the 80’s.
CYril was very much a gentleman , he and his wife had invited me to spend an afternoon with them to dicuss their lorries
Both were extremely proud of their fleet and what they had achieved. One such factor was that Cyril had been the first S wales haulier to put a Volvo F86 on the road DEU584F .
He recalled the day when a Leyland octopus caught fire on the Heads of the Valley road , its load of brown sugar turned to syrup and had to be shovelled to clear the road ,at the time Cyril was hauling for Silver roadways and was using the former RAF depot at Gilwern for storage.
The Foden that has already appeared on this thread was taken byCyril with the milk floats destined for N Ireland via Holyhead this being regular work .

Hiya Pete359…I don’nt know if you remember James c Ashworth Bradford. The same paint job as Morgans.
Dennis might recall them. Well he was old school and anything and everything was there to be modified.
He made his own trailers two welded together but i don’t think he had many break on him as he would put
more gussets than enough on his work…He was renowned for massive cow bars on the front of his motors
and words say if a lorry was going slow up hill they would push eachother.Obviosley this was before the law
started to squeeze us to tight(1970s). Ashworth had a massive contract with International tractors in Doncaster.
but if you can recall disaster struck when international lost the pension money on a combine harvester flop,
and international sold out to case i think this was the ending for Ashworths. They do have a couple of trucks
in preservaion IICR a Maudsley and a AEC both 6 wheelers.
John
The story goes that Ashworth could make AECs better than AEC could,he put the expander tank for the radiator at the back of the cab long before AEC did,he also put a turbo on a Gardner but Gardner wouldn`t suppply him with parts untill he took it off, dont know how true it was.Cant remember the crusaders but he had 1 of the first marathons around 1974 he then went onto volvo , sedd atki and erfs Theres a thread on here on the company

M7 MAC was an Ex Hammonds of Sittingbourne motor. Was owned and operated by an OD from South Wales painted in Hammonds livery. I was a subbie for Hammonds myself at that time so recognized it straight away. Nice pic.

Hi Andrew. No Hammonds finished years ago ( at least in transport ) their still very much in business in other areas, but packed up in transport in the early 90s. I have a photo album full of Hammonds photos going right back to their formation in the early 70s. I did it for the local Heritage center which im involved with. The photos are supurb, some of which were supplied by our friend Bubbleman.
