The first lorry I drove for joints was a merc 1625.It had a 6 speed box with a splitter too make 12 gears. I have been looking at some old brouchures I have and it should have had a 4 speed box with a range change. Is there any one out there that had the same? Or was it a old old !!

I ment too say odd one sorry !!

the 1625 had a 4 speed with range change up to c reg around 1986 and d reg on wards had a 6speed spliter on tomsetts when i was there they had both ranges at the time

If that poor bloke could survive driving that 2025 merc for long, the fire in the tunnel would have been easy for him.

here we have a picture of my mighty f16,taken in the summer? of 2007 at llewellyn’s quay outside what was for over 30 years joint motorways yard then owen’s,now sadly it’s empty as owens have recently moved to a larger facility at baglan moors.

david howells of penybryn near pyle, runs 4 new iveco’s and this scania, dai is lyn howells brother whose atki rigids are shown on an earlier page.

I drove a 1625 for a couple of years and it had a 4 over 4 as we called it, the gearbox you describe was usually found on the 1633 and above, although i did drive a 2025 a couple of times with the type of box you mention but it was a 6 wheeler it had a crawler gear 1234-knock the stick across-5678 and each main gear could be split,a nice motor to drive, huge steering wheel as i recall and a great dislike of hills.

Thanks Bernard, saw stewart a few years back driving for Air Products and the last time i spoke to Toyboy was in Llanwern and he was with Severn Fuels.

hi dave,
i would have said that at their peak, joint motorways could have had 40-45 running out of port talbot,10-15 running out of shrewsbury and around 25-30 shunting tractors based at the abbey, shotton, llanwern and bryngwyn steelworks.they had around 150 trailers.

Hi Andrrew,
Thought they had quite a few lorries in their day,as has been said before on this and other threads, its a shame these firms in most cases are no more, but at least its nice to see the pics to remind us.
Cheers Dave.

here’s one of mansel davies’ fine f7 8 legger’s

And you are right the steering wheel was huge! They also made a weird noise a mate of mine called them chaff cutters!!

here’s a transcon of abernant transport pulling up the bank leaving the abbey with a load of “eye to the sky” on.abernant were a long established haulier, they disapeared around 1990-ish.when i took this image you could stand on the pavement anytime of the week day or night and take one photo after another of the steel lorries leaving the abbey.now with most of the reduced output from the abbey leaving by rail and a general lack of work, you would wait all day to take 5 pictures!

the aforementioned sid evans bought this 112 from alun griffiths in 1995,seen here with a gap european sliding roof euroliner and driven by sid’s son philip “stan” evans.
