Brilliant diary,Niall. That operation at Portavadie seems very slick.Different to the fish farms we do in the North. 6-8hr waits are the norm, while they kill and land the fish. Sometimes think they catch the bloody things with a rod
Good for the POA though

Hi there mate, how are things?.
Was up your way this week (will be in the next diary
).
you still shunting out of skrettan?
Yep they seem to have things under control , we were ment to do a night shift, but it seems to work ok dropping the trailers and starting early.
Least you get to your bed at the right part of the day lol.
Everything’s fine.Been on the fish myself this week, but the boring bit, chauffering it between here and Bellshill/Larkhall/Uddingston and back again
I don’t mind doing the harvests, but don’t get very many.
We may do the odd load out of Skretting now. It’s probably 3 years since I was in there last.Think Fergusons,Spean Bridge do a lot out of there now.I’ve lost touch with the fish side of the job a bit as I’m normally on carrots down to Englandshire
Looking forward to the next diary.
Hi Dingo, Very interesting to see an insight into another type of job. One of your guys fell off the road at the bottom of the Black mount on the A82 a few years ago. I got him out of his cab, just wondered if he was ok, never heard anything about accident. See some of his load is still there.
Cheers…
Great diary, interesting read & good photos.
Thanks for a really interesting read.
I’m sure the tracks (oh, I’m sorry, roads?!) in the pictures have got narrower and drops a little deeper!
It’s good to know that they stun the fish. I always wondered and never dared asked - I thought that they just let the poor things suffocate out of the water …too awful to even contemplate.
Thanks for making me feel a littler happier about their fishy fate!
fantastic niall keep up the good work.
stupid question but do they plant new forest to replace the trees.
Great diary mate always an interesting read. keep um coming!
great read…well done.
Dingo
Is that you that used to park at the top of the Barn Brae?
Have you always lived in Inverary? If so you might know my dad.
Brilliant stuff.

Was a couple of years before i started with them ,but can remember it well.Must have been around 2001/02 time.
The driver was ok, walked away without a scratch, dont know whether he packed it in or was asked to leave.
Turned out he was going way too quick for the corner.

Alex, they re plant very soon after they cut them down now.
Its all well managed by the forestery (well ment to be lo)l.
Makes you feel old when you are driving through a bit that was first cut down when you started and they are already over 20 foot high again.

Been in Inveraray over 15 years now ,so would likely know your dad.
As with all small places ,everyone knows everyone else.
Thanks for the comments guys, was bit nervious when first posting that people wouldnt like my diaries.
Have another 2 weeks worth so need to get typing (slowly lol).
Hi Niall,
Just back from a weeks hols, so catching up on your diaries. As already said, excellent stuff so keep them coming. Probably before your time staying in Inveraray, but I remember giving a lift to a logger driver a couple of times in Lochgilphead back in about 1991-92. It was always a Friday evening and he was looking for a lift home to Inveraray. I can’t for the life of me remember what company he drove for though. We used to swap the brewery motors over down the wee lane half way up the main street on the right, and he’d come over and ask for a lift home. Anyway, get those fingers going on that next diary, cheers.
Ahh. Maybe not then. He moved away a while ago. However his family are still there.
fantastic.
i went to campbeltown this week,on the way up it was pitch black,it was like driving through a forest for 3 hours.
on the way back,i have never seen scenery like it.amazing.
i passed the blue trailer loaded with logs in a layby,in the middle of nowhere, just made me laugh, down this way,it would have been hooked up to a twocked motor, and away within minutes.
i was thinking on tuesday night on the way up(i didnt pass another vehicle for maybe half an hour at times, that if there was an accident, how long would it take the emergency services to arrive.
then coming to the outskirts of lochgilphead,in the darkness,a dark figure came walking towards me with his arms held out like jesus.i kid you not.
i dialled 999,because it was obvious this guy was not quite with us.i spoke to another trucker who had pulled in further up in town at the tesco garage, and he was visibly shaken as well, the same had happened to him.the police arrived there within 10 minutes,so not bad going for being fairly rural!!.
just to add,i thought i was badly done to,the state of some parts of the a82,but on seeing your log road “tracks”, ibet the a82 feels like a motorway to you guys!!.lol.
ps dingo, thanks for your campbeltown info,i ended up going with 9 cars, all flat at 13"11.thouroghly enjoyed the run.
