Just to add a comment on the Leyland/AEC 8 wheeler ( mongrel ) , the front axle`s hub caps look very ERFish to me .

0 Strange one here.

Strange to say the least ! I wonder how many of them were built and it has the Big “A” on the grille ! I wonder if this was supposed to be the replacement for the Borderer ? Quite striking the looks of it ! Cheers Bewick. PS just “clocked” the Borderer badge !

Mr Bewick , just had a thought about the Seddon with the unusual front and since you are an 8 cylinder expert could it just be that the extra 2 cylinders had been stuck out the front rather than out the back of the cab to help eliminate trailer swing problems etc .Remembering that Seddon eventually produced a model with the 8LX Gardner .

Now then Shuggs why would they stick a ■■■■■■■ badge on the grille if it was fitted with an 8LXB ? Cheers Bewick.

Well according to Chris Gardner (what he doesn’t know about Atkinson lorries is not worth knowing) he tells me “I do remember seeing a couple of these at the factory, probably around 1972/3. They were supposedly built for export, and there were publicity photos of a 6x4 version for export to Sri Lanka”.

Well spotted Bewick , I should have gone to " Specsavers " .

I would think your AEC eight wheeler had a cab change not just a front grille those are Leyland/Albion front wings its sporting, the AEC cabs differed as there’s were wider, unless they were changed too of course! Cheers Franky.

I would say 1972 it has the new style ■■■■■■■ badge but the rear light cluster is the older style mount,    -

A tidy 1964 Seddon Diesel 30:4:6LX from Vale Transport Bridgend. I presume it is fitted with the Gardner 150 as this motor is the spit of the C Reg one my Dad drove, although the badge isn’t there the exhaust seems right and the 6LX models tended to have the two cab vents, notice the older Palm Coupling type air lines behind the cab. Franky.

Now I like the look of this motor but would it have been based on the Atki WB of 10’ 8" or the Seddon WB of 9’ 6" ? and next question and more importantly where would this chassis have been built Walton-le-dale or Oldham ? Pity they haven’t fixed an external radiator filler flap onto it. Cheers Dennis.

Thank you Frank and Dennis for some very interesting pictures and info, taking me back to the sixties and looking at Brady and Athersmith lorries as a lad, whenever they went by.

Dad said that he had a Jensen removals van that he was selling (must have been the late forties). One of the Bradys approached him (probably still old Tom, or maybe a young Big 'un?) but they couldn’t afford it. Ironic considering when I would drive to London in about 1970 in the Mastiff, Brady motors were like Fast Eddie’s are now, and you would wave at one every 10 minutes or so!

It’s an Atki chassis, Dennis, built at Winery Lane and photographed in the staff car park inside the Grove Road entrance, but don’t forget the MP cab is mounted further forward than the Mk.2, so swing clearances on the shorter WB would be perhaps be similar? Also, the Borderer was available as a 9’6" WB anyway.

But another thought, since the 400 Series was launched in day cab form on a 9’6" WB, does this point the way to 400 Series development? The accompanying text to this photograph, in Atkinson’s own literature, refers to chassis mods for this “export” model, but I can’t lay my hands on it at the moment :unamused:
