Some Old Seddon's

That’s correct. It was BRS orders that forced Gardner to supply Seddon with 5LW engines, and 1955 seems correct IIRC from when I researched the Gardner engine production sheets. This allowed Seddon to purchase 6LW units within a few years but only in limited numbers. Even long established Gardner automotive engine customers had to wait several months for engines in the late 1950s. They were allocated to lorry and psv chassis builders on the whim of Hugh Gardner. It is on record that Hugh had a spat with one of the senior directors at Atkinson that resulted in Atkinson being rationed. The long term consequence being that Atkinson sought another engine supplier, namely ■■■■■■■■

A view below of the H series ■■■■■■■ fitted to the SD and DD8 rigids, Peter Davies quotes the HF6 as the engine to be first fitted in these vehicles along with the choice of 6LW and 6LX. These elongated pages are a pain to read!
Franky.

Unfortunately I disposed of all my Seddon spec. sheets about 5 years ago (along with hundreds of AEC and Leyland specs.) Certainly the Gardner 6LX was an option but I wouldn’t have though that Seddon would have got any until 1960/61 at the earliest, unless anyone knows for certain? (What year is the preserved Richardson DD8?)

According to DVLA manufactured 1961 fist registered May that year.

Thanks John, good info.

That’s an interesting photo, slightly different front cab panel profile to what looks like an early Mk2 Pennine cab. Location of the Plough Inn anyone?

I think it’s this one, at Sandygate Road in Sheffield. I really like the picture of the Seddon, so I have tried to remove some of the marks. I hope you don’t mind.

That’s excellent information John, The Plough Inn hasn’t changed much in what, 54 or 55 years? Good to see a nice looking pub still open for business.

Now I just wonder what engine and drive line was fitted to that Seddon ? Gardner/AEC, Moss box and would it have been single or double drive, Kirkstall maybe ? Cheers Dennis.

Its a 1960 Sheffield Registration so about two years since the introduction of the Seddon Diesel eight wheeler, as Gingerfold says a different cab design not often seen, would be interesting to know more about the power train too. Franky.

No Gardner badge on the grille and the front mounted exhaust suggests AEC engine, but some Gardner engines also had front mounted exhausts. The rear axle hub covers look like Kirkstall axles.

In local paper today.

That’s a misprint surely ! there’s an extra “0” stuck on the end and then there’s a chance you’d still be robbed at £500 ! Cheers Bewick.

Don’t know if its Worcester ?, Les.

Got bored last night so started messing on the PC and made a Seddon wall clock, just got to add the mechanism, I’ve added the pointers on Photoshop, it will replace my plain round clock in my ‘hide away from her indoors room’! Cheers Franky.
