I have very little information on two depots that S of M had, can anyone help please.
Rainham and Greenock. Looking for any information available, location, storage, staff etc?

Back in 1970 as I recall the Rainham depot was operated by Jameson’s who IIRC were a subsidiary of SOM and I subbed a couple of loads off Jameson’s at that time. The actual SOM depot in the London area was in St. Albans and again I’ve been in this depot a few times picking bits and pieces up for my part of the UK ( South ■■■■■■■ ) and one Friday afternoon I loaded two Ford tractors off one of SOM trailers in the depot for the Ford Dealer at Broughton north of Preston. I tipped them that evening onto the ramp at the Dealer’s as they left me a key at the gate then I hid it back in the place where it was hidden. I kid you not as that was the sort of thing that happened in those far off days ! It was called TRUST and cooperation ! Cheers Dennis.

Sorry Paul, those are 2 depots I never visited.

It’s a long while ago Lance but the name that sticks in my brain cell is Bradshaws !! But it’s down your neck of the woods so your probably correct mate . :unamused:  Cheers Dennis.

The fact that they had a million sq ft warehousing in Camelon intrigued me as Camelon is not exactly a big place. I found this 1938 pic on the website Britain From Above which shows the old R&A Main factory which is probably where they opened a storage unit as it’s the only site big enough to contain that amount of storage. This is now a Tesco superstore. Adjoining it is what became the Walter Alexander, and now Alexander Dennis, bodybuilding site.

What a great collection you have there, looks superb in the cabinet. I wish someone would have done something similar regarding Henry Long Transport. The model collection is a credit to you and would also be interested in your book , maybe get in touch with Graham Edge he was on here and has written several books

All,
I am in the process of writing a 50 page booklet to include the history of the company along with photos of the fleet depots and employees. This booklet will be complete this weekend and will be sent to the printers on Monday. To cover printing costs postage and packaging to a UK address I am looking to charge £8. I am not in this to make money, I am in it to keep the name remembered of this once great Scottish transport company.
To get some idication of numbers that I need printed, could members of this forum please sent a private message to me indicating an interest in purchasing a copy as well as the address where to send it. I will then send my bank details for receipt of payment.
Many thanks in advance.
Paul Bruce

Hi all, I did a bit for SOM back around 1977/78 mostly tomatoes from Portsmouth. They were mainly going to Belfast we would do a change over in Nailers transport in Garstang. Drop trailer park in the corner then pick up the trailer that came down overnight and come back down. Had a message one day to go to the cafe at the bottom of the A74 ( can’t remember the name) as the man from Glasgow was running late he wasn’t happy when I said I had loaded and come up from Portsmouth said I must be running bent. Don’t know what he meant. Could have been the Moss.

Gerbil,

I used to change over with Maddiston drivers on nights at the large layby on the A6 at Garstang,3 trailers each night, good days early 80’s I should think.
