Sleeper Pods

Used to have a DAF 2100 converted like that back in the 80`s. Bloody cold in the winter, even with the night heater on down stairs and the hatch left open for the heat to rise through!!

You had to sleep with the side windows cracked open a tad just to get some fresh air circulating.

Is that a smoke or gas alarm I spy in the corner??

Thats a smoke alarm that you can spy!! I’m told its not that bad up there. I always sleep downstairs so couldn’t tell you. The nightheater is trunked upstairs as well so it does get warm air up there, but we have found that if you crack the window ever so slightly, it helps draw the air so keeps it warmer than if the window is shut!!

Do yourself a favour mate and put it flat, up on the ceiling, over the hatch opening. Much more effective that way!!

The hatch is always shut when travelling. There is nothing worse than going over a bump and something come flying out of the pod…anyway, what are you insinuating, that removalmen are a bunch of chainsmokers     You’ve obviously had experience in the industry LOL

Normally both driver and porter get up together as the driver normally sleeps in the cab and the porter in the pod. When your 4m up in the air in an air suspended cab it can sway quite a bit so not many people can sleep whilst on the move in the pod.

That said, as soon as the truck hits a motorway, the porters normally recline the passenger seat and go back to the land of nod  until the driver gets bored and hits them with something or lowers the passenger window when it is pouring down with rain or finds some other method to torture their passenger

No. Think he means that for the smoke alarm to work better(and someone to now be cooked up there), it needs to be on the roof, right above where the smoke will come in/up from the cab.

Good pics though by the way, ive often wondered what its like in one.

I know what he meant, I was merely taking the mickey    There are smoke alarms in the main cab as well so all areas are covered

You got it JoeG. Except that way,if the alarm is any good (and no one has nicked the battery out of it) you will be woken up before you get cooked!!!

With regards to keeping the lazy (zb) porter awake on a journey, I used to let them drop off then shut all the windows and crank the heating up then watch them start to sweat!! Used to work wonders in Southern Europe during the summer!!   They would wake up red faced and sweating, gasping for breath. That also works well if they have had afew beers at lunchtime

Removals were a great way to actually see Europe, get into the different towns and cities, spend some time there and actually get to meet people. Also, you can be a way for a few weeks at a time.

The only draw back was ■■■■■■■ furniture around, usually up 10 flights of stairs with little or no help (Paris), no lift and some stressed out stroppy customer making smart arse sarcastic comments. :unamused: :unamused:

I have to agree with you Bullitt, removals is a great way to see the world. I have been to many places that I wouldn’t have had the chance to if it were not for the job. You either love the job or hate it. Yes its hard work with little reward at times but that can be attributed to many jobs these days.

Spot on there, yea i agree, get to go great places etc. but that lumping the furniture up the stairs with no lifts, sometimes on yer own no help supplied, is a joke. My dad & bro been doing the job for years, but you can see the effect it has on yer health in away, back problems etc after many years.
