Not one of mine Geoff but I knew “Uncle” Arthur well. He was the source of our permits from day one and when I became an O/D I inherited the “rights” to the permits. We did a parting deal with Newcastle and I ended up with enough to run legally throughout Europe. The rest, as they say, is history!

Hi gazer That was a long time ago when I last saw Arthur,as you say in those days permits were hard to come by.Having said that the job was a different game then. Those were the good old days because as soon as the Borders came down it was a different ball game.On the Portugese run every time you shipped out there would be someone going on their first trip and could they tag along. Then you were not allowed to run home over the weekend, that was the final straw.I have just had a Mary Hopkin moment as Buzzer would say.Cheers mate
Waiting to board dockside., Buzzer.
Another cool picture, Buzzer.
That takes me back Geoff, the new linkspan wasn’t built or the new Truckline/BF office or customs building ,just off the boat through the passport bit and if you were really lucky into the shed !

No prob Geoff, I started shipping out of Poole when I was 17 with the Pigeon Transporter as a “mate”. I was an apprentice mechanic and my tutor was the driver. I also shipped out of Pompey the first year when TT switched from Southampton too. Camera never too far away. Averanches, Niort, Nantes and Pau were the main venues we visited.
I cant remember that company Gazzer but this company used to ship out regular and sometimes would ship
maybe 6/7 lorries on one sailing.
They used to have a few coaches converted into pigeon carriers which were a bit unusual.
Seeing all those new cars on the dock the photo must have been taken when all the Lancia and Fiats were coming into Poole then Abbey Hill loaded them and took them to the dealers , I was looking to see if the old cafe was there ,it was about where 7 is.
It was quite common for Pigeon Carriers to us coach chassis for the vehicle. The FORD was a coach chassis with a Marsden body. It’s the softer suspension you know! By f**k it used to roll but it was a good ride.

Good morning Gazzer. It must have been a coo working there.
Good to see pictures of Chris Catterall’s pidgeon transporters, they had quite a few Ford & Bedford chassis. In the early 70s they also used Leyland Comets, and were involved in livestock transport.Sadly this old established company no longer operates,& the old garage & yard in Hambleton now has houses built on it.
It was my introduction to Continental lorry driving Horry, aged 16. Using my schoolboy French I had more savvy than the other drivers!
Was that the RHD Pegasso demonstrater that T D Williams had on a years trial Steve ?
no m8 harry bought that and matching silver tautliner /sliding roof and alcoa rims on trl . from paris truckshow it looked well i liked it till it ceased up on a loading bay while tipping in leeds i turned key to pull of and bang all under cover but annoying soon as repair/new block in harry had her gone and i got 400globetrotter

Shame that they have gone they really did have some strange/odd vehicles but were always very smart
although old. But i suppose they never really did huge mileage over the years ?
A couple of pictures of old Poole docks and the Power station, although i cant remember the two
cranes by the power station.
