Shell mex and BP Ltd Fuel Depots

Before the paint goes on , getting a good look at the model of the Scammell Trunker Mk1 , looks ok , unfortunately this model was stolen at Shepton Mallet Truckfest a few years ago so i made another. if you look at the previous depot pics with all the road tankers in the depot that are red and green you will see that the tank trailer has more manlids on top of the tank.

Excellent pictures Paul and a good insight of your hobby…how do you make time to go to work?..lol…you explained quite a lot there…Heres a picture of a Scammell Trunker with a Six-Three tank in the livery of Shell-Mex and BP out side what was the new workshops at Dunball Terminal…cheers…Bryan

These are the models that Lou Pope had , he gave me this photo , its a few years ago i would say 6-7 yrs.

A Leyland Super Comet that they had at Shell and BP Heysham , i even had the odd run in it with my father , its got the same registration , i`ve got a photo of the lorry at the Heysham Head making a fuel oil delivery, its where they had the go carting world championships.

Tankerjack,
Have you shown your model tank farm and vehicles at the BCVM Leyland?
If so do you still have the model Gilbraith Tankers Highwayman you told me about.
I did thirty years at Gilbraith’s and when I started we had a few motors on black oil out of Heysham, that was 1969.
The only work I did around Heysham was to the nuke power station with caustic or acid and collecting solvents from the hell hole called Solrec.
I got barred from Solrec, I had to wait four hours for a load and they asked me to drop my tank and pick up one of their flats and tip a load of drums full of recovered solvent, I told them to GTF. I never set foot in the place again.

There was a place at White Lund where we washed out, just a small outfit.

Yes that was me i do remember you , i had your address but somehow mislaid it , i was at the museum last month it was a bit of a let down , there was hardly any modellers , just a big remote control diorama , do you know Don Johnstone he worked for Gilbraiths out of Heysham , i am not sure how long he worked there , back in 1979 i went for a interview for a Apprentice fitter at Lancaster city Council , as we made our way into the garage my father meet Don and said hello , i got that job and worked with Don , he was a rare man indeed. if you send me your address through a PM , i`ll send you that Model , the name on the door is faded i have a photo i put it on. tankerjack.

Thanks for posting the photos TJ.
I can’t remember Don. Basil was the foreman over there, a few years after we came off the contract Gilbriath started drivers around Lancaster to do the Scottish traffic from Runcorn.
A few ex Heysham drivers came back to us. I remember big Brian Taylor for one but it’s so far back I can’t recall other names but I can see them in my mind.

There was a driver called Keith who worked for us at Heysham and he Was asked to cover the BP chemical contract at Hull for a week.
He left Stanlow for Hull with a load of alcohol but decided to go via Morecambe. He left Morecambe early morning straight from a Club and well tanked up.
He turned over at Kirby Lonsdale bridge and burnt to death. That was around 1973.

I have PM my address. I hope to meet you again at the BCVM. Like you, I thought the last model show bait flat.
There was a far better one at the Duncanhualgh hotel Accrington same day,I went there first. Noteboome had a big stall along with other dealers and there were a lot of fantastic home made models.

I have posted a few photos I took below, sorry they are not Shell or BP Tankers.

Hi there Paul…thanks for showing Lou Popes models…as I said in previous post when I saw Lou a few weeks ago he said he had sold them…if I had only knew he was going to sell them I would have made an offer on them…I just assumed they were Corgi ones just like the ones I have not ones he had actually made…shame he sold them…they would have looked good in a set up similar to yours…great to see your models…that was a good one of the Leyland Comet…we had one at Dunball but it was the later model with the Ergo cab…we also had a BMC…no power steering…lol…good for building your muscles up…usually drove that on rest days…keep posting those pictures…cheers for now…Bryan

Heres a picture of a Scammell Highwayman in the livery of Shell Mex and BP…sent to me as a birthday card a few years ago…cheers…Bryan

Hello All.

I am new to this forum and have really enjoyed looking through this one and seeing the great photographs. My father also drove for Shell Mex and BP and then after the split BP. He was based at The Haven Depot in Essex drawing out of both Shell Haven and Coryton refineries.

I have some photographs of the tankers, mainly ERF’s which I took in 1983 back when as a young teenager I loved a Saturday morning shift with dad. Just got to work out how to include them in a post.

Does anyone out there have any images/photos of the depots in and around Shell Haven and coryton refineries, especially the BP Oil distribution depot.

Hi DCK4168 , Great photos of the ERF fleet , the Seddon Atkinson 200 four wheeler has it got a black oil tank on the chassis , I haven’t seen a Sed Atki 200 with a black oil tank do you have a side view of the vehicle ? , the Scammell Routeman was it still being used , it wll have been the oldest road tanker in the fleet ?. I took photos outside the terminal a few years ago , mainly of the road tankers exiting and returning from the terminal , Ill try and find them. I have a few photos of BP Oil road tankers Ill try and put them on. tankerjack.
