Sharing cabins on ferries

Alternatively, the ferry companies could stop saying “They’re only truck drivers, we can stick two of them in the same room together”.

Not just ferry companies either. Everybody, bosses, customers, the public, all need to think about the work we do, the hours we commit and show some gratitude and respect.
The way drivers are treated by the authorities when Calais goes on strike for example. Dumped on the side of the road for days on end. No facilities, no toilets, no washing facilities or food for miles on end. Some charity turning up with Spam sandwiches.

I sometimes got away with saying i had an a loose bowel or vomiting,to get a cabin alone. The ferry staff normally ask what nationality the driver is, to allocate cabins.Nothing worse though, than not getting a good sleep, prior to a booking time delivery to fruit/veg market, after getting off the ferry. Most of us on here, recall when the drivers meals were free, now all drivers meals have to be paid for.Portsmouth used to be allowed parking, now no more.Everyone tries to park by that storage warehouse, which is first left after leaving Pompey port.If you go straight on after the storage warehouse, one tends to end up with a SA80 assault rifle pointed at the cab,by RN MP`s.No turning down there.Once went to Portsmouth truck stop, which the security at the port assumed it would be open, which it wasnt. The truck stop staff, assumed i was a foreign driver, and got short changed,by a considerable amount of dosh.Wasnt expecting the “Hilton”.

even if i’m the first on a boat, i don’t book in for my cabin, i leave it as long as possible. that way most cabins are full.
then if that dosn’t work, once i’m booked in, i go to my cabin, if there is someone else in there, i go back and tell them that i can’t get in, and get another key or card.
it dosn’t always work, but it’s worth a shot.

Not forgetting that they double up tourists too, when they are busy.
It isn’t ‘only truck drivers’ they double up.

The biggest problem is when the next door neighbour forgets to unlock the shared toilet door eh Simon?

I’ve done that  .
The electric lock on my door didn’t catch, so I didn’t twig until I’d given my door a good push so I could manually lock it. Then glanced up and saw the red light was still on. Of course the electric lock had caught it this time :astonished:
A quick visit to reception and a 10 minute wait for a steward sorted it out. :sunglasses:

That’s all I do now, if I can’t open the door.
Just call in at reception, they’ll send someone down with a key.

On the Dieppe route,i would allways stay in the cab, quite clearly,it is not safe if there is a fire or the ship sinks,no one would know i was fast asleep in the cab. There is a stale fishy odour that penetrates the cab,and the fumes from the engine room give you a bad head ache. But you do get un-disturbed rest. The crew have seen me bury under If an officer sees you,it is a different matter.

Maybe if every driver did not leave the cab after boarding, the companies would have to sort cabin sharing out, drive on,lock the door, what can they do,they would have to still set sail,if there was a protest of some sort.

Right I can really see that happening…not :unamused:

Use BF a lot and usually get a cabin to myself, apart from in the tourist season, July and August, when its 2 or 3 to a cabin.

Never considered this a problem, though obviously I would prefer a cabin to myself.

Back in the days of the Coutance if I got parked on the upper deck I usually slept in truck, weather permitting.

Always have a cabin to myself on the Cotentin, but I believe it was designed so as to provide every driver with their own cabin.

Aww, people stop whinging, surely everyone knows that ALL truck drivers are scum of the earth and are lucky to have a cabin at all, we are all potential ■■■■■■, racist, murdering, polluting, brain dead wasters. Apart from me that is, I’m great and holier than the pope……

I can see at least two flaws here, 1/ drivers don’t stick together, never have and never will. 2/ contravention of maritime law , which would see you arrested, truck removed and being black-listed by the ferry operator.

on the irish crossings stena give u a cabin to yourself .irish ferries 2 to a cabin

same amount of boats just bigger

So if they are bigger boats there should not be any problem with sharing cabins correct.

depends on the cabins to size ratio, might be that there are less cabins but with more beds

I think i should change my job to helping brittany ferries design team to get the right ratio of cabins for the transport industrie so giving the driver peace of mind when travelling.

but if its the summer there will be more cars who spend more money on the ferry and therefore get cabins which would normally be for truckers
after all each truck space on each deck can be replaced by about 4 cars and so would use up more cabins meaning less cabins for truckers and the need to share
if you don’t like sharing with our flipflop and sock wearing comrades we’ve only got ourselves to blame because we won’t work for [ZB] pay like they will meaning there’s more of them on the ferries doing the work

can anyone tell me if these taliban drivers were cooking in the cabins?

When are you next on a boat, praps we could get this protest started.

I was on the boat Friday night. I was one of the last ones on, they had me packed in so tight it was physically impossible to get out the cab. Shouted to the guy parking me, and he said you can get out of there, and I said yeah if I was 6 stone and 5"2 but considering I am 6"8 and 26 stone there was no way. He turned round and said to me that’s your problem so I retorted by saying go ■■■■ yourself I will sleep in the cab and he said fine upto you I don’t care. So that’s where I stayed.

Didn’t fancy sharing with 3 others anyway.
