Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Love the last pic. Wonder if he finished sheeting up before it got dark ?
Looked at it again. . . is he sheeting or unsheeting, think it could be the latter

I wonder who ordered the sheet.? far too big I would say for the height they would need for that type of load, I mean have a good look at it, thre reels of paper would not be that high dont you think.?

that blue circle s21 looks like it is at the top of mam tor , near hope works . it was called locally " the shivering mountain " and eventually shivered too hard and the road slid down the hillside and was abandoned . it is a 10 mile detour round to hope works now . cheers , dave

Re Blue Circle Hope Works, I regularly loaded out of Swanscombe in the late 70s for Hope, It was a bloody hard road with the 1418 merc. The address was a bit decieving, if I recall it was Hope Works via Sheffield. “Adolfs revenge” really did struggle climbing those hills then my arse would be in my mouth trying to stop it from running away on the downslopes. Happy days eh? regards kevmac47.

That’s Fred Chappels yard at Batley, and I’m almost sure that is the Sentinal that I used to do 3 load a day, walton pit, Wakefied to Harrogate gas works. 1961.
Hell it was a slow plodder was that thing but it used to go like the wind down the hill past Harewood House with the “naughty” gear engaged. I was only a young fella…no fear. :stuck_out_tongue:

Those two ERFs of Bobby Durhams, cracking photo, I wonder if they are on the Standege Rd. looks familiar, also it could be salt there loaded with from Middlewich perhaps.

Aye,a great photo like you say Larry.
I remember Bob Durham getting “The haulier of the year” award in the 70 or 80s.They also bought out a company called Sandersons if my memory serves me right.Where did they disappear to,big company like that?

Yes, they did take Sandersons of Great Ayton over, they used to run a night trunk to South Wales, green wagons I think,? mostley Guy 8wheelers if my memmorie is correct, they also took some more firms but I cant think who they were, but Durhams had some coloured stripes on their cabs relating to them.

Hello again…great old pics aint they,a big thanks to Retiever for allowing us to see these photos

Cheers Bubbs,

They are great photos. :sunglasses:
Walkers of Blackburn are a blast from the past,I’ve taken a ton or two of steel into their place. And Campeys, another old firm that I remember well - so will Malc Wheelnut I’m sure.

I am not sure whether Thomas Boag Greenock was related to Thomas Boag in Stoneferry Hull, both were bag makers, the Greenock factory was in George Square and the Hull factory was down Foster Street. Maybe a co-incidence.

Yes Chris, a proper old haulier was Campey from Selby. (old before their time) :stuck_out_tongue:

My Dad was at Thomas Boag Ltd at Gloucesrer loading when I had a bad RTA in 1971.His firm from Kington Herefordshire contacted him to come home.

The Cyprien-Fox ERF photo was taken on the A62 Standedge road.
I backloaded off the Cyprien-fox group in the 60s,they had depots all over the place.
Another great batch of pics, thanks Bubbs.

A cracking set of pictures Marcus
This one was taken at the old Eagles Nest cafe on the A62 at Standedge which was a regular haunt, for the photgrapher, the late Roger Kenney.
More of Edward Beck’s long gone fleet can be found HERE

Hi Marcus, if I am not mistaken the photo of the Barretts Atki was taken at the Vitafoam factory on Don Street, Middleton. That looks like the fitters van parked next to the automatic truck wash and if Roger had taken the photo from another angle he might of got our house in the photo  .
You asked me a couple of years ago if I knew Roger Kenney and I said that I didn’t but last year I met up with John Harrison who for a while was in charge of the stores at Blue Darts depot at Stakehill. John said that he remembered Roger asking him if he could walk around the yard to take some photos which John thought was a bit odd at the time so he kept a discreet eye on him. On future visits Roger would always ask permission and John would just say help yourself.
If it wasn’t for people like Roger Kenney, Adrian Cypher and yourself who had the vision to take photos all those years ago, something that most of us on here now regret not doing, then this site would not be as good as it is.
So thanks again Bubbs and to Retriever for sharing Rogers brilliant photos.

Regards Steve.

I reckon that TK is carrying Tavener fruit drops from Liverpool
