How fortunate to breakdown outside the Yeoman pub. And a chippy across the road.

Cheers Phil.

That looks a bit like “H” pulling on the corner of the sheet on that shot of the Albion artic? Anon.

hiya,
Anon I didn’t think you’d recognise me wearing my disguise doing my best to look like a lorry driver I preferred to give people the impression I was the MD.

who’s motor is it anyhow■■?

Hi Vic,no idea mate,I think it was an advert for truck parts and there were front shots of TKs,Fodens and most motors of the day just to illustrate they had bits for all sorts.
I was just trying to find suitable cuttings to put up,and come across it and Scania 80s always brings old Harrys hatred of them to mind, bless him.
Cheers Bubbs,

hiya,
        Super Swede indeed I have been described as a bit of a turnip by “er indoors” on occasion, but the hatred also extends to the articulated version of the Volvo 86 in equal velocity, but at least my moniker is on the motor for once instead of hidden away in the log book or on a discarded logsheet in some litter bin in a layby somewhere down the A1, so please if you want to “set me up in business” please either a 110 or a F88 or no way will I get out of bed.
thanks harry long retired.

Superior from Great Yarmouth are a blast from the past, they used to run up to Woodhouse,Sheffield every night with produce for Lancs markets.I think their livery used to be dark green though in the early 60s,that Commer is a 67 reg.

Look how neat that sheet is rolled, Dennis would be proud.

And all the corner-boards straight too - what a perfectionist.

hiya,
Dennis will need to see the the finished product before he will give marks out of ten, but full marks from me so far nice spot of loading, but rather him than me
thanks harry long retired.

Hiya “H”,hows tricks? Has he just pulled his sheet off the load ready to tip? or is he just gonna start to sheet and rope? If he’s just gonna start I hope there’s an FLT handy! or he should have had his sheet on top during loading! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Yes Dennis it looks like he’s ready to tip as you say the normal procedure was to put the sheet up as you built your load up just in case the FLT driver had gone for his bacon butty just when you needed him, the load has a look of tomato’s i did a few similar loads from Shoreham when Bowkers did the fruit job light years ago.
thanks harry long retired.

Bit of a givaway as hes rolling the sheet up,be a bit of a bugger otherwise.

Marcus,
I have a few old pics scanned in, I hope you don’t mind me posting them here. These are scanned from prints that belonged to my dads uncle J.M. Johnston who ran a haulage firm from Horndon on the hill, Stanford le hope Essex many years ago.
I believe he worked out of Tilbury a lot including bridge beams for the then under construction A465 Heads of the valleys road in South Wales [route was a pre M4 through London and A40.
Neil.

Great pics Neil…thanks for sharing them with us…yes this is the place to put them  …I’ve fond memories of “S” type Bedfords…sat on Dads lap steering one around the yard…poor sod,I was a fat git as a kid too :open_mouth:
Just spotted the beam on the back…look at the front and back overhang…you couldn’t possibly get away with that these days…Brilliant pictures mate

Cheers Bubbs,

My dad used to travel with him [school holidays] and has memories of choosing either North, South circular or ‘through the middle’ to cross London with loads like that. As you say, you wouldn’t do it nowadays
Neil.

Is that a Murfitts motor doing the traction bit for Norfolk Line and didn’t Norfolk Line end up taking over the Peterboro Murfitts a few years ago? (I’m not even sure it was the same firm)

mechanic77:

Hell I remember those. A bloke near us who used my Dads pub when he was home, worked for Crendon Concrete and then J L EVE Construction, that was his mode of transport to the pub, often loaded with overlength concrete beams
