The pic of the J J Halpin KM was taken at Cherry Garden Pier, Cherry Garden Street, Bermondsey SE16, just off Jamaica Road
and near the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

I spent very many hours in this yard and others in the area belonging to the same company with my brother Brian Myers (see B J
Myers Volvo F12 a few pics above the Halpin one).

The company did not become Pierpoint and Halpin - this was a separate company, owned by Melvin Pierpoint and Tony Halpin -
Tony was the nephew of Jim and John Halpin of J J Halpin fame.

Whilst Pierpoint and Halpin mainly did rags to Italy (mainly Prato I recall), J J Halpin (or Halpin Continental as they rebranded it) were pioneers in unaccompanied Cross Channel transport of glass, chipboard, etc.

In fact the trailer in the picture was for carrying cased glass and known to the drivers at the time as a BAT trailer - well, it did have
‘wings’ on the headboard and it was in the days of the Batman TV programme.

Happy Days

Re Knowall / JJ Halpin.

Spot on, I can remember my old Dad driving various Bedfords for JJ Halpin back in the sixties. We lived off the Old Kent Rd then.

Also seem to remember BJ Myers little yard on the corner of Glengall Terrace and Trafalgar Ave.
I used to work across the road in Neate St.
As you say, Happy Days !!

BTW, is BJM still going, there is a listing for them in Aylesford ?

hey bubbs,

what is the name on the S type? do you know?
the logo on the door looks like Carmans old one

Hi Toddy,I had the magnifying glass against the photo and its very difficult to make out,it could be Marwin transport who I believe were a part of Carmans…but to add more confusion, the Bedford has a London reg number…I dunno mate.
Cheers Bubbs,

Hi Buubbs,

I have just managed to zoom in on the door (don’t ask me how i managed it, i don’t know myself) & sure enought, it has the Marwins Wings & lettering (part of Carmans as you rightly suggest)

You will notice the lettering on the roof (what you can see of it) is the same font as the ‘Dodge in a spot of bother’ you posted previously

Oh yes - and the reg would be right as they were based in Grenade Street, London E14

Good work - keep em coming

Toddy

Nice one Knowall,
Yeah, Tommy Tuck, Ronnie Sansom etc.
We were in what used to be Perrets yard opposite the old R Whites pop factory.
Great times, started with them at 15 (1967) we had the steel contract pulling imported steel out the docks.
We had a bit of everything, Mk V AEC’s, Atki 180’s, Thames Traders, even a 6 legger TK with a Leyland 0400 lump.
Thanks for the reply, brought back some Happy memories.

All the Best.
