This was the last part of the Wild Group to be running after “The Vicar” died and the group fell apart.
Madderns was running out of the Sowton industrial estate in Exeter although the original Madderns when the Wild Group took them over was in Redruth.
Madderns at this time was,I believe run by Tom Heaver who was a junior transport manager in the days of the Wild Group when their depot was in the quarry on Sidmouth Road,100 yards up on the left from the roundabout by Exeter services.
I think Madderns then became Heaver Brothers, haven’t seen them about for a while.
The original Exeter firm that was part of the Wild Group was Tancocks of Exeter.

Someone must have taken loads of photos at that junction! Anyone any idea where it is?

Don’t know but I don’t think Spencers strayed far from Stoke / Cheshire area, their lorries wouldn’t have made it much farther

Must be somewhere between Stoke and Chard then!

Sorry,double post!

Think the Steel Company Of Wales Newport,s Wagons were Bulwark Contracts, could be wrong.

Not wishing to detract from the bubblemans brilliant thread and images. Here are some very old B&W photos that are for sale but you can view them for free. All catalogued and sorted into sections, from early commercial motor show pictures to Gracie Fields.

Another one that you have not seen Bubbs, Bristol & West Tar Distillers.

I can ramble on about this one. When I left school I worked in an office until I was 21 and I left to work for this firm repairing the lorries. ( posh suit to boiler suit). My only transport was a motorcycle but I soon passed my car test and before I knew it I was driving the lorries including this one. It was a while before I could afford my first car.
The six wheel conversion on this Commer was done by Unipower and when it was delivering to a quarry one day the chassis broke right through on the drivers side behind the cab and opened a fair gap. We went out in the pick up and got the quarry crane to lift the tank off and we pulled the chassis back together with a wire rope strainer. The wokshop welded it good enough for it to be driven to Dando,s at Chipping Sodbury for a proper job to be done.
The firm had seven of these Commers and they all had to go back to Unipower for the chassis to be plated. I had to take this first one and I had never driven anywhere near London but the foreman told me it was behind the Hoover factory and you could see it from the North Circular. By the time I had got near Reading on the M4 the flex exhaust pipe had broken away from the manifold and all the bird life on the lakes beside the M4 fled in terror from the noise of the two stroke engine.
I think I got as far as Edmonton on the North Circular before I stopped to find out where this Hoover factory was. I only needed to turn onto the A40 at Hanger Lane and it was about a mile to the Hoover factory. You can see it from the North Circular but only when you know thats what it is. A walk to the nearest station and a train to Bristol and I was back home
deaf, dirty and hungry but at that age a great day. The end came for No 10 in Somerset when the engine gave up with a hole in a sidecover and I towed it back with a Mk V mammouth major and we scrapped it.

Cheers Phil
