I think Smiths should get Nathan a waggon and drag tipper like the Foden and trailer in Bubbs earlier shot, they wouldn’t need as many subbies then as Nathan could double his productivity( If he could manage a waggon and trailer that is!!) Anon.

Come “H” he’ll have to start with a “■■■■■’s” trailer first, but wether he’ll make it onto “turntable” outfit will depend on wether you and I will give him a “pass ticket” when we put him through his paces!! I can see you having to get behind wheel to extract him after he got "dog knotted"though!!! We are rotten (zb) “H” aren’t we!! Cheers Dennis.

Yes Dennis proper turntable and stang bar onto a single pin would sort the men from the boys oh and zilch power steering and a spot of back street working like round the jute mills in Dundee where the cry was we’ve had bigger than that in here driver when the old eight legger and drag was the longest general haulage vehicle allowed on the road in days of yore certainly bigger than permissible artics of the day which incidentally i taught myself to drive in a couple of hours one wet morning in the late 50s in a mill yard in Nelson.

I can’t recall what the civillian name was for this motor. The R.E.M.E. had them with my regiment in Germany.
This one does not have the original hydraulic lifting gear,I wonder if it’s got the original Rolls Royce B81 straight 8 petrol engne in?
There’s one in white at the side of the M5 in Somerset.Been there years.

This one made me smile Bubbs
I remember when they first appeared in that lavender (ooh err missus) colour scheme, they were known as Purple Johnny to one and all. They had a big fleet of ‘bubbles’ as well.
Passed their warehouse the other night - at least one old(ish) company still going strong.
Cheers

Youv’e started the third finger on my right hand "throbbing"with talking about a single pin draw bar “H”! I nearly lost the finger in question one day when we had to uncouple the trailer at Metal Box,Breeze Lane in Liverpool. The turntable was on a bit of “askew” and loaded with tinplate,so there was a bit of “pressure”,when I pulled the pin the bar nipped the Sovreign ring in my finger!!! It took me 3 days to get it off!! I’d payed £6 10s for it a few months previous and over that time the manager of the Kelmscott cafe at Chorley ? had been trying to buy it from me! So the next time we “digged” there, usually after tipping at Metal Box,Westhoughton,I let him have it for £5!! He’d bid me £7 for it the last time we’d stayed, but I was glad to see the back of it I can tell you “H”!! My mate Eric liked stopping at Kelmscott as Harry, the Manager(who’d bought my ring) used to always get a card school going, not my scene though so I’d get my “head down” as I sometimes drove the Octopus next day if the carding had gone on a bit “late”!! Happy days–Oooooh I can still feel the pain in that finger though! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis wish i’d had the chance to do a bit of trailer mating did’nt get chance straight onto driving, down the pit on Friday down the road on Monday but apart from a bit of scraped paint in the very early days did’nt do much damage would have been nice to have done the mates job and got a bit more experience you know learned a bit from a driver with a few years experience under his belt and i’d never roped and sheeted a load fortunately my first week or two was spent on night trunk where i only had o drive A to B and the trailer “boy” was an old guy who’d been a driver all his life but had been “grounded” because of failing eyesight but he did learn me a lot like how to reverse in the wee small hours of the morning when waiting for the daymen to turn up, i think that was the right way to learn the trade and just pleased i did’nt have to take the test i’d had to i’'d have most likely failed had there been questions asked or anything needing written to do with the highway code.

Hello again, heres a few more oldies.
Cheers Bubbs,
You are an absolute star for saving all your childhood dreams and sharing them with us. I am only on page 10 and its showing a total of 211…thats a lot of reading. I am enjoying not only looking at the old vehicles i once drove, but also the names of companies that i remember proudly and also worked for.
It brought back memories when i saw the tony truder
crusader, and jogged a memory of when i was in felixstowe and suffered conjunctivitus, which meant i could barely see my hand in front of my face…he got so annoyed, that i couldnt get the truck home…he sacked me on the spot…and told me to get myself home…i was taken to a hospital for eye drops, and then i had to thumb a lift home, but there were a lot of great people around in those days, only too willing to help a driver in distress.
