TIPIT:
A few varied ones I’ve found to help out for now.Ex army Bedford at Salford docks.
1930’s bump in Manchester.
Southport Sand from Ainsdale, I remember hearing these 2 strokes as a kid and thought they sounded like sports cars.
Are these still going near Kings Lynn, an article in an 80’s mag said 2 sons in their early 20’s and their Mother took over running 3 of these ERF’s after their dad was killed in a lorry accident.
I wish I had a £ for each time I went through those gates…eventually!!
Sherran’s from Stalybridge.
Reyner’s old Droylsden yard in 1971.
Nelstrop’s of Stockport.
Merrick Bros of Heywood.
Hi 900 x 20
The Dennis model that you are thinking of was a Dennis Stork. The Stork was a lightweight chassis with a 4 cylinder underslung engine which could carry a lightweight aluminium body and still come under 3 tons U.L.W… This was the magic figure of course when they were introduced in 1954 as they could be driven by an under 21 y.o. at 30 MPH when over that weight was restricted to 30. This was all very well in theory and a number were built as large capacity pantechnicons which, being only 7’6" wide, tended to blow over very easily. Rheem-Lysaughts in Bristol had about 5/6 used for carrying new 45 gal. oil drums to the refinerys and this was a very common occurence.
Sorry that should read “restricted to 20”.

I remember the 3 ton limit and can always remember a Karrier that belonged to Pyes from Lancaster that had UW 2t 19cwt 3qtr 27lbs marked on the fuel tank thus keeping it below the magic 3 ton. The road tax used to be based on unladen weight as well and I remember getting wagons ready to be weighed – taking the batteries off and fitting car batteries and taking the passenger seat out plus draining all the oils to a bare minimum and dropping the water just round the corner from the weighbridge.
Hi Truckfing
Yes, I did all that. I started with a Morris Commercial with the Saurer engine and, at 20 years old in 1955, I had to strip it to the bare minimum to keep my job. It had a canvas tilt on a wooden frame on the back and it was a wonder that the whole thing did not cpllapse on my way to the weighbridge with all the timber that I had to remove. Boy was I glad when I became 21 and moved onto a “proper” truck on my birthday.
My first lorry was a TK Bedford JAT 204D an ex Corrals/PD Fuels flatbed coal lorry that weighed over the 3 ton limit so I removed as much as possible including the two giant 6 volt batteries replace with a small single 12 volt, removed the passenger seat etc and not only managed to get it under the magic 3 ton but below the next 2 ton 15cwt figure so even cheaper tax at that time .
Then when the new HGV rules came in with the new gross weight limit for car licence holders of 7500kgs as my TK was 10 tons gross I had a class 3 HGV licence restricted to 10 tons gross granted to me
Regards Pat
It could also be a Bussing or an old Sentinel. Some of the running gear looks like Albion.900X20.
Great thread with some fantastic photos of oldies, slowly working my way through them.
Thanks.

Nice to see you back Marc, just looked at Charlie’s Marathon it’s got a Lancashire reg could it have been a demo motor or a secondhand buy which would have been unusual for them.

Re.the underfloor engine subject.BRS Doncaster had one.It was a 1949 Sentinel Reg.No.LWB 589.Fleet No. was 3D1238.
The engine was a 6.08 litre four cylinder horizontal, underslung just behind the cab.
Found a picture of a Sentinel,BRS with the underfloor engine.Hope it comes out OK.The air cleaner can just be seen behind the cab.Regards,900X20.

Someone mentioned having a picture of Johnny Barwise, anyone got one of Budgies Scania too. Stan’s 142 would have many drivers screaming in horror, the bunk was full of ropes, straps and trailer light boards, and he was on tanks great bloke though.
.
Welcome back bubbs, don’t know if I could cope with 3 weeks away from my PC !!!
Love the F88 pic keep them coming
