Love the Higsons Ales Albion tanker, thats smart

they had a crackin fleet of albions always spotless

very beautiful ,on off best "designed lorries have seen :exclamation:

they would have been better designed if you were able to get to the nearside of the engine to work on the exhaust manifold.

Hi again, more old stuff today,Cheers Bubbs,

Hiya Bubbs, always nice to see the old Tayforth photos, the company i worked for from 69 to 73,regards Vic.

Hi All re the pic of Rutherford Brothers guy it says the fridge is a Thermoking pdl 50, I may be confused but my memory tells me a pdl50 was a Petter unit which were allways quieter,i could never figure out why in the midst of all this technology the manufacturers could never come up with a quiet fridge engine,WHAT! .  The Murfitt volvo in the old colours reminded me of a guy i used to know who drove one just like it ,i cannot remember his name now but ist met him in Sheerness i heard he later became Transport Manager for Murfitts before they were blue & white iirc he lived in Eley. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: Take Care Melv.

Hi again, heres a few more bits,Cheers Bubbs,

Lovely photos Norfolktrucker, especially the Murfitt’s F88 in their original colours. Looks like he had a dodgy connection for his light-board so had to use his “long-lead” which is tacked down the nearside of the trailer. Come to think of it I wonder if many other ferry firms used this method apart from Norfolk Line and Frans Maas. I’ve mentioned light -boards in a previous posting but it didn’t bring forth any comments. Cheers Haddy.

When work was a bit quiet in the Ferrymasters garage, we used to make the light boards up out of old side timbers / cabbage boards from the tilts as they were just about the right width. It was rumoured that some of them got sold to the subbies for a quick fiver (but that was pure speculation of course, rubberlite lenses et al)

I wonder how many of you old School remember that it was illegal !! for Hotels in Germany to refuse us drivers a hot shower if it can be proved we were nowhere near a truck place ?.I to have a Inspector of Police as a Friend that lived in a Village outside of Baden Baden cos,i met him once when i was arrested for arguing in a bar, anyway cut long story short they let me of and i met an Inspector Hof (David) and he said if i could bring out certain things from uk he would be a happy man which i started doing and we ended up good friends,he even came over here and stayed with us a few times.Anyway i was in Heigar w.Germany i tipped went up to the usual Resturant at top of hill and it was closed for Refurbishment so i went back to Factory to see if they had a shower of which they didnt but they said go into town to any Hotel and they will let you have shower if not ring Police.Strange i thought they were winding me up,so i went to hotel walked in with my Gear and they told me where to go in no certain terms. So i thought id go into a bar av a drink and get showere later. While in there thought id ring my Friend Hof he went mad and told me to go back to hotel and sit tight which i did,i was told to leave but told them im staying put .10 mins later in come two coppers they came up to me and said in there best broken English (as you do) are you john the British Driver i said yes, he said come with us please so up to the counter we went never did understand what was said other than all the shouting that went on.Anyway turnsout Hotel got 500 Mark fine (3 to a pound then) cops shook my hand off they went. The manager said sorry let me have shower and he even threw in a meal for me,so is the moral to this story its not what you know its who you know.I dont suppose i would have got anywhere without him cos not a lot of Germans Spoke or couldnt be bothered to speak a little English.I dont know if its still Law or not or it may even had a local bylaw maybe ,hope you enjoed this story and what a Website this is its giving me hours of pleasure now im retired reading about the places we used to eat at the Journeys the Wagons we drove (sorry i dont like the yankie word Trucks lol)
and when you see all the old company nameson these lorrys you think bloody hell !! i remember so an so who used to drive for them.Keep it up everybody .Who remembers parking up in Almeria in on the site where they made all those Clint Eastwood Westerns god what memories come on lads some of you must be out there,we used to park in a circle and all cook in a couple of pots chucking everything in long as it was edible ha ha great days.

Thanks Bob for the Lebus Photos im happy to say it was in the early eighties i was driving for them and not 1955 ha haa. Great to see them pics though.I drove Bedford TK 22000 Cube tailboard down with furniture on that as well, same as we used to do on Stonehills.Actually it might have been the late Seventies i was on Lebus still who s counting the years

I would give my right arm to be able to sit down and read all the old Headlight Mags if only i had kept all mine from the first one i bought which i think was 1967

Good to see a Frieghtwise truck pic this goes back a bit to sometime in the eighties. If anyones interested the Merc D421 TTW owned by a Robin Stillings who hailed from Bishops Stortford,he didnt do any driving at all i think the driver of this Vehicle was Bob ()2nd name i cant remember yet,Bob is one of these people that would just go missing from one day to another. I remember when i was about to leave for Spain (i used to sub for Robin) he said to me i havent heard from Bob, see if you can find him when you get there.I was also running with another driver (my best mate) Big Ray Giles (rip Ray) when we got to Almeria we dropped Trailors (forgot to mention we ran down empty as did in them days to collect Fruit) ray jumped into my unit and of we went.Went to all the usual bars that we knew, found out he was taken to Hospital 20 miles away,so of we went when we got there Nope sorry, he signed himself out, last they heard he was in a local Bar(should tell you he loved his drink and was pretty well known in the Almeria area) went to about 3 bars only to be told he jumped into a Taxi and went back to his Cab in Almeria. Ok sounds simple enough, only we didnt know where he had parked it cos it wasnt where we all normally park up. 3hrs later while driving around saw a copper we knew and said have you seen Bob,yes ! he said hes been arrested for being drunk, paid his fine we all had a drink with him from the stn and last we heard he gone for dinner an hour ago, thats it we thought we know where he is it will be at Marias down by the front sure enough there he was avin a drink and a laugh with the locals like nothings ever happened ! first words to us were Jonboy ! Gilesey !what you doing here, looking for you we said Why !! he said my units in garage being repaired garage people said all taken care of spoken to Boss !.Wrong !!! they spoke to wrong people ha ha ha ,but that was Bob he was a great Character. The Wagon i had was a Merc 1626 (a Pig !) that i had bought of Robin Stillings and he got all the work for me i used his fuel card and he gave me running money. Money wasnt the best but there was a lot worse. Most of his work was Spain Italy, but loved the American Air Force Base s in Greece, where you would load 5 ton beef from Belfast Straight to there base and sit there till there meat had run out. Then the next trailor would arrive and i would then load Grapes and come home only to do it all over again,Magic !what the problem was they never had a large Freezer at the Base until they could get a new one built,so whoever went there you were there Freezer ! for a whole week ! and there bases were like minitowns, Bowling alleys, bars, burger resturants, etc, it was like a holiday, this went on for about 5 months.Last i heard of Robin he moved to Poole in Dorset with Company a long time ago.Hope i didnt bore you with this story i could have gone on and on

Think about it Lads what would go down nicely now after all these wonderfull pictures of all the Wagon s ■■

Pictures of Transport Cafes, come on lads put the word out wouldnt that be the icing on the cake to have

all them pics of all the Cafes we knew and loved ,and of course the Routiers in France and Spain.

Hey Harry
Possibly know each other, as i to used to algerian run.Load Northern Ireland Fresh Beef when we had sit and wait while they slit the throats of the Animals (poor sods) i seem to remember this used to be on a Thursday afternoon then once loaded later they would then say you got to be at Marseia (sod it !! cant spell it) by Sat Pm for the Boat if you missed it the next ones Tuesday then the trip would be of and you would beout of a Job.Now that was a hard drive to Dover. Then from Calais practiclly non stop to Marseeille.2 hrs to spare normaly then your 2 days on the tinbucket the food so rotten all you could do was to drink and drink.Get to Algeria of the Boat(Tin Buckett) round to Customs they break Seal check that the Temp is Spot on (has to be) help themselfs to how much meat they want then when your cleared to go its up to the DIRTY ROTTEN !!! Slaughterhouse to be unloaded in the stiffling heat meat left outside (so much for getting it there in fresh condition) tip, wash out in cold bloody water. And up the road a bit fill up with Red, Belly as well then park up cos the next boat isnt till Wed "!!.Still beaches were always nice and do you remember where the nice fresh beef that you have tried so hard to keep the temp perfect ends up ■■ thats right hanging outside the shops, full of thousands of flies! on the bloody meat which is how its supposed to be ha aha i didnt know that on my first trip so it was a bit of a shock to say the least.I remember once back in the docks at marsaile (still cant spell it) we used to hide behind the containers before we got to customs and wait till they went home.(i should say for the Benefit of drivers that hadnt done this run, that you were only allowed i think it was 250 litres into the Country when in fact we fill up while in Algeria cheaply belly and running tank about 1500 ltrs, and once a boat has been and gone thats it Customs used to ■■■■ of to the bars or wherever they went) then out of hiding we would come out of the Docks park up then ring in for back load.Nine times out of ten it would be Scicily hence the amount fuel i had to get ha ha.And i still cant bloody spell !! sorry about that

John
