I never liked the Rear Tag they always had a strange feel to them and suffered with a bit more understeer .
Rear tag does look better thought not that it matters .

I havn’t got a fron’t shot but I took this one morning just after leaving Boalloys at Congleton,I had just bought this 6 month old 6x2 R 360 and prior to it going into service I used it to ferry the batch of new Tautliners back to Milnthorpe. This Scania was like brand new and had belonged to an O/D from Lincolnshire who had retired. It was a cracking motor for us,but it also had a brilliant driver at the wheel,Eric Atkinson !! Cheers Dennis.
Dennis , do you keep in contact with any of your old drivers? ,do you miss the this game?

Hiya “Jakey”,hows it going? Yes I am in touch with a number of Bewick Transport’s former Drivers, some regularly others periodically. Some have even popped up on the TN site to renew their aquaintence with me ! As for “missing” involvement in the transport industry I’m afraid that I am a product of an era now, sadly, past ! However, one thing does, or would, put me clean off the industry to-day,and that is the cost of fuel to earnings which is well over 50% and IMHO is absolute madness and just goes to prove how far “down the pan” the industry has sunk in the last 15 years or so.Cheers Dennis.
Thanks Dennis , its sad but I thought you may say that , too many fast eddies !!! , my dad use to shake his head at the hassle I was getting , he told me to finsh it ,if ever were getting too much hassle . may be just maybe

Was there a big difference in running costs between the Mid-lifts and the Rear -lifts dennis and did you prefer one to the other ?Hiya “bowser” I don’t recall any difference much between the two types, but my personal preference was the mid steer chassis,a lot smoother ride than the Tag axle. Suprisingly the Volvo FL10 6x2 with the fixed pusher mid axle did suprisingly well on tyres IIRC.Cheers Dennis.
The mid steer was a much better ride Bewick I tried both & for the sake of My back went down that route…
I prefered the tag axle they were much easier to reverse and get into tight spots… Just sayin

I cant make my mind up if im going to be bothering with that thing , it just seems to me to be a total waste of money so i can carry on doing something ive managed to do without for god knows how long .
I probably will do it but i’ll moan about it and have the odd rant saying im not doing it just like everyone else . I’ll probably also be in a blind panic 3 weeks before the deadline when it costs twice as much .

Aye! your probably right “bowser”,a decent driver could always plan his day and get his proper meals during the day ! Cheers Dennis.
S,J Selfe,s 113,based at silvertown east london. They also had a “K” reg streamline 113 but I don,t have any photo,s of that one.I did a few trips to germany in this one before getting an XF on there,It was a flying machine.Only trouble with it when the rear tag was raised it would wander a bit when empty.
heres a pic of my old 113.
one of the best lorries ive driven and a big favourite of mine.
it was about ten years old at the time, but i loved it-very easy to drive, great steering lock, the best mirrors on any lorry ive driven before or since and dead reliable.
if i could have another one in good condition i’d gladly swap it for my current motor.
the cab was very cramped but i could live with that…
