Now which Farmers market did you buy those from ROF ?         Bewick.

Cheeky s*d!
You can see the repair in the bag made after Mickey Mouse ate his way into it last year! Anyway, farmers can’t grow spuds as good as those.

Are going to a garden part in September, near your old parish?

Evening all, ROF , apologies, I did not see this before!

They look good, Winstons are a great “domestic” early spud, they should be, as a Disiree/Maris Piper cross. Lovely white tuba, and very palatable. Did you get the violet flowers, they look great when they flower, and they are a very consistent grower.

Another nice one on the Allotment is the Charlotte, bit more “fluffy” on the pallete, and a smooth creamy skin. Perhaps you would like to try some Sapo Mira, next year. Hardy, with a really eye catching red skin, that hides the soft textured white flesh. Quite spectacular to look at, (but keep Micky Mouse away from the sacks)!!

Cosmetics, as well as taste are pre requsites of our Supermarket clients, so yes, to answer your question, Farmers do have to produce, and present to a very high standard…consistently…or we are out…simple as that! This year the Harvest for everyone looks good…the Housewife wins…and we loose our margin!

But a bit of “lateral thinking” a few years ago…and some of my “specials” are going for Vodka!..Bit like one of those fold in side tipping trailers…you could do all sorts of traffic with them…until they fell to pieces!..But my Spuds w`ont!

And just thinking about “Micky Mouse`s” brings back shuddering memories of a freezing misty morning in wonderful Kirremuir, (does Scotland have a colder place…of course it does J&A Smiths “shed” in Madistone), trying to make a reasonable job of, (frozen), sheeting a load of spuds for Birmingham Wholesale Market, back in the 60s. Then climbing back into the plastic cab of my 150 Gardner S21,…I was so cold I ripped all the blankets off the bonnet to try and get some heat into the cab…without any luck of course…b… fibreglass…just made it noisier!!!

Spuds and lorries…just made for each other!!

Cheerio for now.

Oh dear Saviem, if only Smiths could have loaned you just one of their 40 Big J’s fitted with the Gardner 8 LXB! You would have been nice and warm with all that hot air wafting around the cab…

Pete.

Still on a horticultural theme (sorry to all you folks who think the Spud Tales are boring), I’ve tried Charlotte, but my clay soil seems to encourage a bit of scab. I’ve also tried the Sarpo varieties in order to lessen the chance of blight which we are prone to, being right under the Pennine escarpment, but I’ve not grown main crop for a few years now: I find that a decent 2nd early like Nicola can be left in the ground to bulk up while avoiding the blight problem.
The Winstons were a first time for me, grown more as an experiment but they seem to suit my soil very well so will be a ■■■■ regular in future.
You can all go back to lorries, now!

hiya,
Bloody hell it’s all “taters” to me, I specialize in weed growing you always get 100 %
with them and no need to bother to get someone in to irrigate them when having a
day or so away, mind you the Missus’s fresh herb pots look a bit sad when they’ve
been neglected for a week or so, I’m so grateful to you agricultural gentlemen or I
would never get my chips, now isn’t it nice being appreciated ■■.
thanks harry, long retired.

Somehow I don’t think you’ll be tasting any of mine, H. Unless you think it’s worth the journey to fetch a dozen or so spuds?

hiya,
Now then ROF is that you’re way of telling me “I’ve had my chips” just as well
the “Gaffers” got me on a diet then, many moons ago when doing my bit for
Robbie Killingbeck I did a lot of seed potatoes from Ireland via Preston dock
and through Northern Ireland Trailers the old Irish spuds were delivered wide
and far throughout the UK, never short of a few for the pan in those days, Oh’
and my Mam and Dad had a chippie at the time so they made a few bob too.
thanks harry, long retired.

This would be handy for local spud deliveries, Buzzer.

I refer to the comments on another thread when I was questioning the integrity of various “truck salesmen” of yesteryear ! I can honestly say that when ever I sold a tractor unit or the odd rigid or so they left the depot, sometimes a week or so later, in exactly the same condition and with the same rubber on them as the day I dealt up.Much to the exasperation of the workshop staff at times “can we switch that stereo and those mirrors Boss onto vehicle such and such” "No you bleeding can’t the motor has been sold and it now belongs to “Joe Bloggs” They couldn’t understand the finer points of an honest reputation which I jealously guarded! Sometimes,a Dealer pal would send his customer into our depot to view the “goods” which invariably had been bought un-seen prior to the visit but thats how we dealt, the motors were described exactly as they actually were whereas certain other traders/sellers should have been prosecuted under the trades description act for some of the motors that were supposedly “mint”.Old fashioned I know but at least I could always sleep sound at night.Talking of the haulier you mention from Wildest Stoke,he once sold a MK1 Atky to Scotts of Penrith that was still on “chuckie”,minor oversight I believe the excuse was !! Happy days provided you were wick enough to avoid the elephant traps ! Cheers Dennis.
