The Dinkies as you call them
John
I worked for a firm years ago that bought a used F7 8 wheeler ( bulk tipper ) it had the same paint job as Sam Longsons, the only sign writing on it was Fenstone on the head board. Anyone know if this would have been anything to do with Sammy ?

Sorry Chris, it went to Lomas Distribution. Tarmac decided that they wanted all the Bli stuff out of Tunstead and Hindlow contracted to one haulier and it wasnt us. Shame but that
s life. 5 years before that theyd got rid of Somersets tankers so it was down to Longsons and Lomas, you could see it coming then really. Just goes to show that even after all those years loyalty means jacksh*t. Think a big part of the reason was the fact that our fleet was made up of mainly Erf
s that were starting to look well past there sell buy date where as Lomas was running alot of shiney, blinged up Scanias and Volvo
s that looked the part.Tommo
sCF
(above) was the odd exception along with a couple of Premiums and a couple of 2nd handxf
s.
Lomas Distribution is known locally as Dinkies basically.
Does “Dinky” pay decent money or is it a case of shiny blingy motor and crap wages?
Last time I was over the UK Lomas was in Sam’s old yard at Chapel but he’s got a new place now I hear. Are the motors double-shifted?
Chris
Lomas still owns and uses Sammys old yard as well as the new setup at Waterswallows. His firm just seems to be getting bigger and bigger but Im starting to hear quite a few disgruntled drivers. I know that you often get drivers talking bull but i
ve known some of Lomas drivers over 10 years so think I know whos talking bull and who ain
t. Since he started to grow to over 120+ a lot of managers
have been employed who basically dont give a monkies who they upset some of the lads who are
long termers are now looking for other jobs. Money wise £800 a week is atainable, know a few who earn this regular but they are real nodding dogs, darn
t say no etc. First time you do youll be down to about £400 a week and find yourself on an
03 Scania instead of the shiney Gobstopper you
ve just been on. Always has been a bit of a if your facefits
firm really. Those that earn top whack are never empty, which is how they earn good money cause everbody is paid on a % of what the truck earns, so if you have to run from the very top of Scotland empty, tough your doing it for the love of it,and they do do that cause some of the jobs insist on dedicated tanks.
Same as any other firm in the way you get drivers who say its the best job they
ve ever had and those who say its crap.Even though it
s only a 5 minute drive from home to his yard i`ve never entertained the idea of going there.

Here you are lads a picture of the man himself Sam Longson (on the right) with Derby footballer Roy Mcfarland.
JOHN
August 1967, age 19, he had just signed from Tranmere Rovers for £25k, the BEST centre half this country has ever seen, John Terry / Rio Blingo et al, could`nt lace his boots.
Sam forced Brian Clough to resign, due to his “hands on” old haulier style chairmanship, tough as old boots Sam was, I don`t think “god” could handle the owd bugger
