Seeing the Argosy got me looking back through the pages of a couple of fellow flickrites I follow, if these are of interest there’s more. The thread is a good read from those who have been there, good on you

Thanks Oily. They are great. Any more pic’s would be appreciated.
I watched a T.V. documentary in Moscow that said that officially over 80% of the population were what we would regard as chronic alcoholics. Where we lived there were a large gang of alcie’s living rough in the local park. During the winter a large number of them would freeze to death. This went on throughout the city and the number of people who die of the cold, in Moscow during the winter is quite astounding.
Hey this looks a bit beter Robert
Ideal for trips to and back of Moskva - Wladiwostok.
Somewhere read that Willi Betz did the first trip to Wladiwostok alreay in the '70’s ■■? only once or more ■■?

Eric,
I once met a Dutch driver who had been as far as Chita. He had to use the military roads but he was delivering for them anyway. Robert

Eric,
I’d like to know how they got a truck to Vlad in the 70’s as the road used to stop at Citta. It still wasn’t properly open in the 90’s when we were out there a lot of the bridges weren’t built. I think it finally opened mid 2003/4
A friend of mine and his wife flew to Europe for a holiday and bought a Fiat 500 in Italy, as his wife had always wanted one. They picked a good one then spent a bit of money on top of that. Suspension, brakes, steering, electrics, etc. Then drove it back to Australia, they went right across Russia to Vlad, ferry to north Japan, which is fairly hard to get on to as it’s a very busy route. Indonesia, then into Darwin and drove it anti clockwise round Australia to Hobart. They have a blog about it somewhere. I think the biggest driving day they did was about 300 k’s. The whole trip took just under 3 months.
Put against the price of a package deal holiday to Europe ( death by castle sort of thing on a bus ) it wasn’t that much more and they still have the car as well.
When NASA was going to moon they were just getting set up to do the landing and they met Dutch Scania and tilt coming back the other way. The driver told them the beer was crap, and really expensive.

Jeff…
There was no road past Irkutsk. The only way out to Vladivostok was by rail. However, who remembers Ford trying to take trucks out to the ■■■■ East of Siberia and drive them across the Baring Sea, to land in Alaska. They got to the edge of Siberia and then bottled it

It used to be Irkutsk but you could get a ferry across Lake Biakal and then road out to Ulan-Ude and Chitta, best part of 1100k’s but it stopped there for a long time. There was a link road north out of Chitta to Tynda. Most of that was unsealed as it crosses tundra and the frost just kills the rest, to far to get a road crew to etc… And of course there are mosquitoes that are big enough to carry of a full grown bear… Late 80’s early 90’s they started to pushed the road through the mountains round the bottom of the lake to Ulan - Ude and linked it to Citta. There was sporadic roads here and there round towns and mineral deposits, and eventually they were all linked to Vlad . I was told that even in the 70’s you could drive west out of Vlad for about a day and a half. The road kind of hugs the Chinees border. ( I can’t imagine what kind of benefit that would have been to the Russians )
The thing is that there really isn’t much out that way, and the rail handled what was needed at the time. Besides it’s quite easy to monitor peoples movements if they all have use the only means of affordable transport. Not so easy if they can all jump in their own transport an wander about willy nilly. I think it’s still a bout 9 days to cross the Trans Siberian Express Moscow to Vlad, and probably the same coming back average speed 40k’s if I remember. ( but that’s night and day )
Interesting thread this. Suddenly the Middle East seems… mundane!
John.
