Russian Roulette

On the opposite side of that coin Eric, I’m sure Jeff will agree with me on this, the worst lorry to sleep in after a long drive on a hot day was a V8 TurboStar, two turbos right under the bunk made it like a bloody oven.

For me the coldest was a 1632 Merc with no night heater and no thermostats, so running the engine was a waste of time. I only did one trip in it luckily.

OOOOH I’d agree with anything you say # 1

What are those weird hamburger looking things ■■? I’d put my glasses on and have a proper look by the local optolegist said I wasn’t emotionally ready for glasses yet…

Turbo Stars hot in the summer… Mid July my wife and I did a run from Modena to Calabria we got there about 2 in the morning, and it still +35 out side … Of course the Turbo Star had an integrated Webasto heater in so when it defaults it just pumps out hot air… tried sleeping on top of the tilt, but got eaten alive by muzzies…and my wife wasn’t to keen about climbing on top of the tilt either… Lying in bed sweating at 3 in the morning… I think we got of to sleep about quarter to 7… just before they started doing sacarrico thing at 7…

I parked up at Broken Hill about 4 in the morning with the delightful K1 …still stinking hot… so I had left the Kieser Ice Pack running and sprawled out on top of the bunk… I woke up about 7 with chilled kidneys…

Jeff…

My webasto got mangled when I had the chassis shot blasted, so it ran hot permanently, I fixed it with a brass tap for a garden hose in a B&Q car park after getting the pox of it. To adjust the temperature I had to open the front panel and turn the tap, I would quite often be seen running down the road in the middle of winter with both windows down.

What a story Jeff
But you didn’t feel the urge to tell those experts that fire and plastic and fuel don’t mingle all that well together then eh

Cheers, Patrick

Hey, old Antwerp docks LEP international depot where you could find always Russians and Romanian.

Eric,

I had the same thing on most of mine… The last 48 I had actually used to work but that one was serviced by Zambinni near Aviano…

I used to jump out at the paege and turn the tap one way or the other… On going north … Off going south… I got it down to a few seconds while I was waiting for my change…

I was out in one of our older K1’s last week and it was blowing hot air all the time as well… 29 to 36 all last week… Luckily I now carry a small G clamp for just that kind of occasion… same sort of trick… open the grill and clamp the heater hose… Laugh my bollock of at those know it all young blokes sitting in it drinking litres of water ( Red Bull ) all day looking like ■■■■■ when they get back to the yard…

Jeff…

A couple of pairs of mole grips have got me out of hose related dramas more times than I can remember.

Mick! There’s a good review of your book on page 48, in March issue of the Scottish truck magazine, Transport News (several copies in Smiths in C/bury  ). Robert

Hi Jeff.

Had a few things come up so have only just got round to reading the story. Brilliant mate. Dangerous times eh ?
People who have never been to the far flung places don’t understand the risks involved.
I got robbed at gunpoint twice by the Iraqi Police. It is an exciting thing when you look down the barrel of the gun and wonder whether the Herbert will pull the trigger.

Well lads, here in the U.K. it is 09.00 and the morning rush hour has just finished. Bet that you are glad that you did not have this lot to contend with this morning. A snapshot of life in Moscow. Not for the faint hearted. Nor for me anymore thank God.

Hi Mick, glad you liked it, hope it cheered you up a bit…

We were doing a safety thing at work a while back and the guy presenting it went on about lining up all the ducks in a row, and how if they all lined up it was pretty inevitable that something was going to happen… Just a little bit here and there, leads to a bigger thing and once that falls into place then suddenly your heading in the wrong direction…

I was looking back over it this morning and I’m still a bit 50 50 about it… thinking if it ever gets into print I might change it a bit or just drop it altogether. I still feel a bit betrayed by the second part, there I was starting to feel safe, and the rug got pulled…big style…I thing that part was scarier than the first part…certainly didn’t sleep to much that week…

Jeff…

Read an article years ago about this man, I reckon he was the only one brave enough to do trips like that in a Renault Magnum…
Anyone ever met this chap?

Random pic’s…

Wasn’t he called something like Asia Tom, or am I confusing him with someone else? Robert
