Rob K:

But you ARE doing exactly what the Poles are doing over here. Working for peanuts at the companies that the locals won’t touch with a barge stick.
and then:
Just because you’re being paid the same as a Canadian does not mean that that’s alright.
Is it me, or are these two statements just a bit contradictory?
Funny how they both seem to have it wrong. There are more Canadians starting at this firm than Brits, but the majority of them leave for pastures new because they don’t like the sheeting. I do, so I intend to stay put. The money is on a par with the whole of Manitoba and most of the rest of Canada and things are cheaper here. I notice that the RR charactor doesn’t let too much on about him/her/itself. There is a statement somewhere about regular work to Alaska. I think that is not strictly true. I also wonder if they use FAST for border crossings? If so, what nationality does it say on the card?
David, if I am out of order here then I apologise in advance, but I suspect that there are several ways to catch this charactor in untruths. I do not believe his/her assertions at all. I may be a newbie over here but I did my homework before I came and have done my best to continue learning.
So the company is in a Mennonite area… so what?
The Mennonites are helpful, polite and friendly. It’s a very safe and pleasant area to live in. The exact opposite of Vancouver Island where they have similar problems as many places in the UK. I live 30 miles from a major city which sells evrything I need, so buying beer is no big deal, and the folk around here have no problem with people drinking. I imagine it is more of a problem to folk in Vancouver.
It’s a fabulous country. Don’t let turkeys put you off making a move like this.
I get the feeling, bobthedog, that what we have here is some prat that either cannot get a job or, more likely, can’t keep one and is thrashing about trying to find someone to blame.
It’s the verbal equivilent of running a key down the side of some nice motor because you haven’t got one.
Just one question: What is a Mennonite? It sounds like the name of some kind of building material.
mennonite.net/ explains it. They are a religious people who have several core beliefs. They tend to be really good and hardworking people, and decent to work for.
I agree with much of what you say, David. I have no idea what the beef was. In general, the Brits have been well received over here. We are being looked after well by most of the firms here, and drivers are more curious than aggravated by us.
On the CB, we get ribbed by others, but it is almost invariably good natured and fun. In stores and restaurants, we get the same courtesy as any other, and in many places we get more than others because we are the odd ones out. They pick up on the British Sense Of Homour (it deserves capitalising) rapidly enough, although the Canadians struggle to understand the British need to insult one another. One waitress in a seafood restaurant took a rapid step backwards when I called my friend a silly tw*t and I had to explain it to her with an apology.
The biggest laugh of the insulting little twerps posts is that we get remembered for our humour. I was in Toronto a few weeks back, having a laugh about the traffic on the CB, when a Canadian from RRs neck of the woods joined in. He had remembered me from six months before and we had a good laugh.
As for RR not being able to get a job, I would never employ anyone like that. Chances are he would rant to someone’s face and end up in hospital leaving me with a truck stranded somewhere.
It doesn’t matter. Spardo thought I was wound up, but I wasn’t. RR showed his colours nice and early so I knew what to expect. RobK joined in because that’s what he does. They, neither of them, were armed with the facts. They just wade in and hope for a response. I’ll respond, but only to make sure that an ex-pats views are logged here. I would hate to think that people would be put off by such nonsense.
I will start another thread in a bit. Something to let people know what to expect if they come here.
