Run my own class 1 truck?

pg1973:
Omex in Kings Lynn Norfolk only use owner drivers and you only need the unit as you use their tanks, its basically fertiliser to farms the busisest time is from march to october but they do run a fair bit all year round. Not 100% sure but i believe they are going to be looking for owner drivers in the next month or so.

I know absolutely sod all about Omex in Kings Lynn, and call me cynical, but I would be asking them, and the many other companies that offer the same opportunity why, that if the job and work out of there is so lucrative, are they not running their own trucks to make the profit themselves, that they will be no doubt promising potential owner/drivers… just a thought :bulb:

Their season only lasts around 8 weeks. The tanks are very old but well maintained. if you can get in there on the first phone call, then can you pick my lottery numbers for me too?

Perhaps they did as my previous employer P&O Ferrymasters, saw the light and got rid of the all the headaches, hassle and costs of running own fleet and employed drivers. Some office based admin staff are then also no longer needed.

No employment law to abide by, no wages to pay, no drivers off sick, no drivers all wanting holidays at the same time, no drivers “I don’t want to do this, that, the other run” etc. no vehicles to purchase and associated running costs and losses. No drivers or equipment to stand idle in a quiet period but still need paying for. No upfront costs (apart from trailer provision), subby gets paid sometime after the load has been successfully moved.

It does make business sense, even though I lost my nice job through it. :frowning:

I don’t know anything about Omex either, but in my own case it is because the company I sub-contract to are based in the South-west but need vehicles stationed in other parts of the country, although not in sufficient numbers to make it viable to open depots in those parts of the country.

I have two mates that work for a large well known UK own account operator, they tell me that the owner is getting sick of the hassle on the haulage part of the job, and it has gone from top range motors to bog standards, no pay raise for 5 or so years, and from dead mans shoes employment to drivers leaving weekly, also “The Green Death” are in there as subbies already, so the writing is on the wall, and they are getting prepared for lower wages in the near future.

From what i’ve been led to believe the main season is 8-12 weeks but then they still operate the rest of the time. The only problem is that the ones who havent been helpful or who have caused any damage to the tanks dont tend to get the work in the quieter periods but they must do ok out of it as they still go back for the main season.

To be more accurate, their main season only lasts for a short while. Iirc 8 weeks. Although 8 - 12 weeks is likely too. I know they have regulars on there and 1 or 2 that are kept running full time. Bit of a gem mmtm.

What does mmtm mean or am i being thick. Dont think i would risk losing other work for 8 weeks with them.

MMTM = my mate told me

That’s the beauty of running a spot hire business versus being a subby imho.

some companies offer quicker payments (for a fee) or you could invoice factor (again for a fee) I looked at invoice factoring once upon a time, decided it wasn’t worth doing the work as lost all the profit in the factor, also once you were in that cycle difficult to get out, there’s plenty on here that will tell you about companies who pay early though I for one would like bringing up to date with factoring, I’m sure it’s changed over the years.

So Goaty can you tell us all & explain to the wannabies all about factoring please ?

All about factoring? I don’t recall proclaiming myself an expert on the subject.

We factored with Bibby for c. 18 months. They’ll promise the Earth to get you into a contract.

Ours was iirc 15 months min then a 3 month notice period.
They required a debenture against the company.
We had a 75% advance against invoices with the fee of 2.5% being taken once the customer paid Bibby leaving us the 22.5% balance.

All good on paper.

Our customers were all credit checked and given a limit. Also in our deal all invoices were insured.

The devils in the detail however.
They failed to point out amd I failed to check that subsequent customers, while being credit checked amd given a limit were not insured.

So when we had 2 of the ■■■■■■■ go under on us for a total of £20k, this news was a bit of a choker.

In short, don’t touch them with a barge pole.

It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of industry pundits on here that still view there business as unworthy.
Yes big companies want to dictate rates and terms. That doesn’t mean you’re incapable of negotiation.

I’ve got all sorts of payers. Up front, CoD, 7 days, 30 day’s pay when they feel like it…

Do I have all the answers? No. I think passing on my experiences to others on here can inspire others to get a bit of fire in their bellies as far as rates and work goes.

Take it or leave it. This is the point of the forum though imho.

Thanks for that goaty I think giving people actual figures really helps, Though having quotes for factoring I never actually did it so having your insight is useful, thanks again.

You hadn’t said anything on here about factoring but your company has an outstanding credit with Bibby’s

sorry it’s late on me replying ,but thanks for all your advice will look in to it abit more.

cheers people

If it helps mate, I know of a company near me that are fairly quiet (more than expected at this time of year) and they’ve been in the haulage industry a hell of a long time…

Think very carefully, and good luck with whatever you decide! :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

You could always register the unit in Bulgaria then you wouldn’t be getting shafted by this government or need access to the same high amounts of dosh in order to operate a truck, I know that even if i came into loads of dosh and set up a company i would be giving the registering tractor units and trl’s in BG some serious thought in order to cut my operating costs , but i wouldn’t be favouring drivers from other countries over our natives to drive them or paying crap (minimum wage or less) wages

I looked into that, it just is not economically viable, if it was then every other truck on the road would be running on Bulgarian plates. The websites I looked at offering this service stunk of “Bulgarian con trick”.

Any operator finds MOT week expensive, and that’s without having to drive to Bulgaria and back to get the test done. :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course there are pros and cons to running your own vehicle, i know, i used to run 2, but you will never be the boss, oh yes you may own the truck ( thats saving someone else the bother ) but you have to Insurance, Road tax operating licences, and a yard rental to pay for, so thats the first step. Next is to find some work, and its advisable to find this before hand, and also work out what rate you can run for, that includes running costs for the truck, trailer ( or rental ) servicing, maintenance, tyres, wages and an accountant, the average today is around £1.30 a mile. If you can find good work, you will find that you are not inn control, they will control you, if you want a day off, they will have to find ways to cover their work, that could open the door to someone else, who may be cheaoper, so offer a good service, offer to always cover their work load, even if you have to take time off, put a driver on the truck, and always be polite, and honest. There are many Owner drivers out there making a reasonable living, but its not easy, on your days off, you will have to repair the truck, so make sure your missus is understanding, dont go for top of the range trucks, with all the bling, it doesnt make money, it costs money, and always seek advice …good luck

No way! Not worth the risk!
