went on a school trip to france when i was a kid .was the day radio cariline sank
It was not so much the weather that sank Caroline aka Mi Amigo but the fact that she ran ashore and pounded on the bottom added to the fact she was as rotten as a pear with more holes than a vegetable strainer
Row boat in the local park, force nine storm, sea sick.
mv europic out of stranraer one winters night in a force nine gale, the boat had just come back from the falklands and it showed, one minute facing the moon the next heading for the bottom of the irish sea. never seen waves that big before or since. 8 hours to get to larne. scary scary very scary.
Mines got to Esbjerg denmark to harwich, i dont travel the best on a boat anyway with some Dover to Calais crossings running to the nearest toilet, but this one was bad, I think i counted four times throwing up threw the night, when we docked in harwich the sea was brown and even on dry land it was as if i was still on the boat feeling it roll. But the funniest thing happened when we did a couple of hours up the road and pulled into the BP truck stop at Alconberry, having managed to pick threw my scrambled egg but still looking abit green, i was asked by a Pulleyn’s driver if i was ok so i told of my ordeal, after finishing my full story of why i felt so rough he says " you know what you want eat if your on a rough crossing" being young an naive i thought this bloke was going to give me a total remedy of sea sickness he said " plenty of rice it wont make you feel any better but it gives the sea gulls something to eat" needless to say he was nearly covered in what was left i my stomach
Ramsgate to Oostende In 2001, 29 hours due to bad weather (A trip that takes normally around 4 hours)…
Ship had to sail further into the North-sea to find calmer waters. No cell-phone network, but luckerly enough my boss was on the same boat. We were the only two that weren’t sick…

The trick was to have a meal as soon as you were onboard, then on the bunk to ride the storm out, the lower down the deck the better.
One December I arrived at Ouisterham to find the previous sailing hadn’t sailed due to bad weather (gale force 8-9) but after a little while we were told the incoming ferry had sailed from UK and was inbound to Cherbourg (only on berth here!!) & all trucks booked for that sailing should head there. I don’t mind admitting that I expected to find pandamonium when I got there & I wasn’t disapointed.
Anyways, all Cherbourg ferry’s had parked up and wouldn’t sail but the inbound Quisterham ferry landed, unloaded & we were told to get ready to board as the captain was going to sail, so I did. We were very quickly under way, I was ‘up the lift’ on the top deck and it was blowing a ‘hoolie’ but true to his word we got underway, I had a scoff and headed for a cabin & some kip. After about an hour or so I woke up almost standing up with my feet against the outer wall of the cabin, the ship settled back & I got dressed as I was convinced we were going down. My thoughts were reinforced when I opened the cabin door, the toilets had emptied & the passages were awash with water & toilet waste!!
I headed for the restaurant to find all the ‘starboard’ side windows smashed & a team of ships staff boarding the windows up with sheets of plywood, (a bit worrying that they carry such supplies!!) anyway, the captain announced that the weather had worsened from force 8-9 and was now force 12 which is Hurricane force & we’d turned into the wind & had to ride the storm out as we couldn’t continue or return in that weather.
We eventually landed in Portsmouth after 11 1/2 hrs on board, my load had shifted and was sticking out the side of my trailer, it was unloaded in the dock @ Portsmouth to be re-packed & I ran home empty with a stripped down tilt strapped on the deck.
Ross.
PS, just another day at the office!!
