Yep I can rope & sheet ( did forget how to do a dolly knot but a quick reminder soon sorted that out thanks for the help )
Would do it now if required
robroy:
I remember that it used to be a job you took a pride in and a well sheeted load using two 30x20s and a fly looked good,( or in a few cases not), I used to do nothing else a few years ago, I had a flat on the other week, my head told me I could still lift and chuck sheets, and jump up on the trailer like I used to, then my arms and legs didn,t agree , I also had blisters on my hands , suddenly realised I wasn,t the young fit lad I used to be
BTW I am 4ft 10 " tall approx. 7.5 st & can do it as it is down how you do it we have had this discussion before IIRC

Me too. I started driving about 35 years ago and was roping and sheeting for the first five years until I started to do freezer work. I reckon I could still sheet and rope a load if I had to, but as you get older, like robroy, I guess my body would make me pay for the privilege…
its a dying art these days theres not many of us left that can do it these days i take pride in my work and try to pass on the skills that have been taught to me to the new lads that turn up at our place

Sorry didnt mean to but a look at this pda-uk.org/healthmatters/rea … kpain.html & I can still do it but have to be careful as you get a bit older you just have to find different way of doing things not always brut force but technique helps
My old man was brought up on this kind of Haulage, driving forJ&H Hinchcliffe from Bury.I used to tag along with him when I was little, and help fold the sheets, and coil the ropes.I have a bad memory of being in Hinchies yard 9 years old, and being on top of a load that was really high while my dad was rolling out the first main sheet, and not being able to get down. He did a short stint with Transcontinental Freight from Heywood on multi drop around France, and that was with a sheeted load. Anyway that was when I decided I didn’t want to be a (lorry) driver, and why I never got involved with flat work. Having said that, I know people that do it well, and I take my hat off to them.
I learnt to do it on hay and straw loads when i was a kid. I dolly knot left handed. Did a job on agency for a firm that runs flats still does from the south. In their yard in the west midlands load came in driver took his ropes off . Tm came out and said take that load. So backs under coupled up,Gets me ropes out,Heard one of the regular drivers say to his mate bet he can,t do this,So started at the back and then started going forward.Heard a bit off noise the other side of the trailer so looked underneath saw some one standing there crept round the back and he’s standing there with his arm inside of the rope as if to hold it so it would be slack when tightened. Nips back sticks a dolly in quick pulls it up and sticks another in quick and pulls it acts like a set of pulley blocks one pulls the other tighter tights it of and goes for a ■■■■. I hear this bloke shouting for his mate as a quick look his mate is letting of the rope to let him out. I walks across and hes rubbing his arm didn’t say nothing just gave me a dirty look. His mate told me later that his arm was bruised to hell.Never did speak to me ever,Or came near one of my loads again.
last roping & sheeting i did was 94 /95 ? I was driving a renault G290 & close coupled trailer with demount bodies , & used to haul a lot of fertilizer out of ICI severnside / avonmouth that had to be sheeted , & iirc there used to be an opensided barn at the end of the site for sheeting down in the dry , but because there was so sides the wind used to blow through someting wicked !
Another was romanian urea fertiliser at sharpness , ply board from tilbury ,fertilizer or feed from the old Dalgety mill at avonmouth, potatoes from dundee area, but that was with thick insulated sheets , ■■■■ they were heavy !
i was new to the job & wasn’t afraid to ask for help & i always got it & if i saw someone struggling i too would & still will go help if any were needed .
do i miss it , no i dont as i now have back problems , but if i really had to i’d do it again , still enjoy seeing a good sheeted load on the road & hats off to you that still do it

not the neatest but it was a hot sunny afternoon ( rare these days, i know )
under the sheet was a 3 drop load that has to be sheeted for every drop but
paid by the hour and did a full 15hrs so pretty easy day
