I read a book written by one of those ex-pat people. It seems to me that there whole way of life is the same as it is on there forum. They have no regard for anyone. They probably drive the same as they write. They are all cowboys and so are better off in Canada.
All depends on wether you think that the connection between long distance North American truck driving and the old cowboy way of looking at the world is a bad thing or not.
Chuck out the tacho and the limiter and drive the thing at around 65-70 mph here and you’d be called a cowboy these days in the negative context which is one of the reasons why I would have been an ex pat if they’d have let me work there years ago when I wanted to go.
The tacho and the speed limiter are the big diffence between lorry and car driving. It needs self control to drive a lorryand not break the law. Are ex-pats who drive with out tachos and limiters doing it because they did not have the self conrtol todrive in England? Not everydoby is the same but is it a big reson for going to Canada?

How could the tacho and limiter be the big difference between driving a car or a truck considering the mileage that the North American industry (and ours) has done over the years without the need for them and the idea of self control requiring the use of tachos and speed limiters is a contradiction. But definitely would have been one of my reasons for going.
I am here via the Rhymney Valley, Cardiff and Central Florida.
It looks as if we were all denied access for a couple of days whilst the site was cleaned up.
There are some good members on here lets get back on track and have real discussions, like how emigrating changed your life, for better or worse.
Regards Paul
rico i think you are a bit off the mark with the no limiter ,tacho .in canada anyway,
ie.if your truck goes into ontario for instance they must be limited to 105 kms max ,
also most trucks have qualcoms fitted for comunication to base…the company knows to 10mts where you are at any time ,it also checks how long you are at work ,speed, fuel economy.engine idle.
and if you have an accident the police can demand to check the memory!!records to see if it matches your logbook…
so much for no self control.

But it’s more of an issue which only applies in certain cases and the issue of excessive control is subject to far more resistance in North America in general than it is here such as in Alberta where many drivers, operators and the authorities are refusing to follow the ideas of mandatory limiters and electronic recorders .
But a truck running in North America at 70 mph, without any of the control freak ideas listed, would’nt generally be viewed as being driven by a ‘cowboy’ in the general Brit context of the description so the issue seems to be some British thing that’s slowly being adopted by North America but luckily not without a fight.Which is probably one of the reasons why North America remains a good alternative for any driver who values a less controlled working environment.

@ Nianiamh. Iread your comments to my mother and she said you are very perceptive. She said anywhere on the southcoast after the kids had gone back to school would be fine. She also said that if you dont have anything nice to say about any body then dont say nothing at all. I told her that it did not apply to forums. i have read a lot of Nainaimh comments and think he was being very mild to me.
The question of elderly parents must be a concern to ex-pats. Has everybody made plans if the worse comes to the worse? I am a recent recruit to lorry driving and it stops me from having nights out.
I understand that all the writers freinds would support his book.I think the image of lorrydriving is more important. Even Bob the dog admitted it was the unacceptable face of lorry driving.
@Carryfast. when i say self control Imean to be able to control the urge to carry onhome after the driving hours are finished. I am amazed at how many laws drivers must obey and how much checking is done. Criminals with electronic tags are the only ones with so much control. no other workers are watched as much as lorry drivers.

Well here’s how i emigrated.
I’d just left the car/lorry park in Edinburgh one Friday morning heading back to Wetherby when i saw two girls hitchiking, so being the humanitarian i am i picked them up. They were both Americans from New Hampshire traveling around Europe.
I never had any thoughts about comeing here befor then but after maryying one of them it was fairly easy to make the move.
I rented an artic from Hertz and got my US licence but most trucking firms still had drivers layed off in the 70’s so got a job in an asbestos factory in town here in NH.
We moved to Richmond VA when i got my first truck driving job then got a driving job in ME so we moved back up to NH. They went belly up after a few years so i drove for a big trucking firm from Green Bay WI. though we still live in NH.
An RDC for a big retailer opened up only 60 miles away so now i drive for them
I haven’t had an adventure filled glamerous life but i’ve enjoyed it and i’m still married to the same Yank
Charles

Only to glad to of been help with Mothers holiday destinations, i think youll find btd was takin the rise :unamused: Your concerns on elderly parents is a very good point, before i left them behind i gave my mate who drivers a JCB a couple of hundred quid and he said just bell him whenever and he
ll pop around and get the job sorted to save me the trouble of flying back, so see us Ex-Pats are not all as wreckless as youd have people believe  Is Nainaimh on this forum as i
ve searched but can`t seem to find the user to read there posts.
As your not able to have nights away maybe this could be of some use to you for a few evenings a week

And the type of self control I was referring to would be that in which there’s at least no tacho or speed limiters enforcing the rules in a cast iron way and in which overtaking can therefore be carried out in a safer and quicker way and sometimes a more ‘flexible’ attitude to speed and hours regs can mean the difference between completing a run and getting a longer unbroken rest period rather than having to have another pointless break on the road which actually makes the day longer and means less sleep,and/or quality time at home, not more.
At least I think that’s how the North American industry mostly worked at the time when I wanted to go there. But you seem to be looking at the job from a 21’st century euro/brit viewpoint rather than a 1980’s American one.Although having said that I’d probably have wanted to come home as often as possible to give the Jag a blast on unlimited autobahns as in an ideal world we’d have American truck regs and speeds and German car ones
@ Nianiamh.Sorry about the spelling mistake. The name obviously means something to you. But i dont think any body else would have noticed and if they did then they would have noun who i ment. No need to apologize Frank its only a name, people will answer to anything,
just a tip thou it could be a good idea to let them know first before you start issuing folk with new names it may help with you getting a reply from them, instead of them looking around thinking who the heck is Ken talking to now.
Always thinking of others me Jeff and plenty of land about for the digging with the JCB he`ll just use some of the old spots we used to use for fly tipping, job sorted.
Happy Easter Alan hope you and Mother have a good un…
@ Nianiamh. Rico is not my real name. It is a nicknmae given to me by my workmates at the builders merchants many years ago. It is because i have a laugh very similar to Rico the drug dealer in the Crocodile Dundee film. So be afraid,be very afraid.
Since i started lorrydriving, i have not called myself that at the agency. How did you get Nianiamh?
The more i writ it, the easier it is . Nianiamh, Nianiamh, Nianiamh. Got it now.
