commonrail:
Decided to push on abit further today, and have the night in Lincoln farm.
Not been in there for 6 or 7 years.
Mixed grill still hits the spot…with a couple of beers
Lincoln Farm blast from the past, was using that on nights 55 years ago when it was a 24hr caff
I think I had my very first night out there as a young kid in a Transit pick up. …got my eyes opened that night.
It ain’t changed, decor still belongs to that 55 year ago time, (not that I was there then )
Truck park like The Somme battlefield, and all packed in like sardines…hope a truck never catches fire btw
No more …‘adult entertainment’ anymore as there once was.
The owner (who I think is the son of the previous owner) is a fully paid up member of The God Squad. , him and Sploom would be a match made in heaven…literally.
Instead of ‘enthusuastic’ strippers and ■■■■ films as in the old (and better) days, there is a Bible in a case with an offer of ,errrr …help to anybody who wants it.
I kid you not.

Is this a post from 20 years ago?! Roadside cafes have mostly been history a long time sadly
I think the o/p was referring to the grotty caravan type eateries ‘Sam and Ellla’s Caff’ type establishments in lay bys, that serve cheap.greasy crap posing as food, which I avoid like the plague…(mainly to prevent me from getting the plague. )
Ok fair do.s,.there are a very small few that are up to standard tbf.
I find the ones on retail parks are better quality, a lot of them do roast meats, pulled pork and the like, but the ones who just ‘look the part’?
It’s a no from me.
Bloody hell I’m sounding like a ■■■■ snob now.
(I ain’t a one by any means btw )

I used the sit down cafe in the picnic area at Honiton today.
Used it for years you always got a good meal for good value, with good portions.
Went in today, looks like it has changed management.
First thing I noticed was the prices have gone right up.
I ordered a ‘Small breakfast’ and it was just that…'ie small.
Got a tea with it it came to about 8 quid,.there were other larger options available, for obviously more money up to about 12 quid I think it was…(dont quote me on it)
Got to say that tbf what the (very attractive) young lass served me was good, even though there was not a lot on the plate for the price, but they seemed to go for presentation rather than quantity.
Ok it was good, but not as good as the last owners,.and deffo not as much on the plate.
Will go.again, but I’ll maybe try the bigger option next time.
On other hand I’d sooner pay a bit more for decent quality food, than buy cheap greasy crap.

Admittedly not ranting, but complaining that you got what you ordered, small. While stating you’re all for paying what it takes for good quality. How much did you value the tottie with your tattie scone? [emoji2]

It’s just that I like things all my own way, big portion,.good quality,.tasty but cheap.
But Aye she kinda compensated for the 8 quid small breakfast.

Visiting rellies up north today.I thought I’d check out former transport cafes on the A1.One (forgot the name) adjacent to the old Masham exit is now a Hymas Depot.Londonderry lodge was 24 hour but is no longer there.Another one (name forgotten again) is gone. There is always Leeming Bar as a poor substitute.
At least near my home is a genuine transport cafe, slightly upmarket maybe, open 24 hours even Christmas Day.The Red Beck motel on the A638 2 miles south of Wakefield.Dare i be cynical and say that many of today’s micro managed drivers would never have the time to use it ?

Londonderry Lodge was originaly called Lawsons ,t hey also had The Moss Cafe just North of Carlisle on the A74, Their logo used to read CAFES COME AND CAFES GO BUT YOU CAN ALLWAYS RELY ON LAWSONS, The Moss closed about 1998, IIRC Its a BP Filling station now.

Yup,the scourge of Starbucks/Costa/Subways/Greggs is clear to see, doing to roadside nosebaggeries pretty much what supermarkets have achieved via hollowing out local shops but serving up a totally different type of epicurean swill at top dollar.I find myself missing the Little-Chefs’ of yore. Not exactly haute cuisine per se; but they had consistency of product at reasonable cost i recall ?.Those vanilla ice-cream pancakes with chocolate sauce were always welcome with me.Starbucks/Costa seem prime usurperers of many of those buildings with their corporate focused crap.
The Jubilee pancake…
A sugar bomb of cherries and squirty cream stuffed in a pancake, it followed on from the big 7 burger with chips. The whole lot coming in at under a tenner. Best part was actually being served and the food appearing on actual plates. Never spent more than a tenner.
[/quote]
Of course, a tenner was two hours wages back then.
